‘Wicked’ Cynthia Erivo Gives Shocking Response During Interview
Actresses Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are both starring in the film adaptation of Wicked and have been promoting the project with a press tour. During one such recent interview, Erivo’s response ended up going viral. Fans, and even the reporter who interviewed the actresses, has commented on the meme.
The Press Tour Has Become Known For Being An Emotional One
Erivo first came to prominence after appearing in the Broadway revival of The Color Purple in 2015. She would then transition into films, notably playing Harriet Tubman in the 2019 biopic Harriet.
The actress has gained further recognition playing Elphaba in the film adaptation of Wicked. Based on the Broadway musical and the Gregory Maguire book of the same name, the story explores the early life of the Wicked Witch of the West, who Erivo’s character is set to become, from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Ariana Grande appears alongside Erivo in the film as a younger version of Glinda, the Good Witch, with the film exploring the early, unlikely friendship between the two witches. Both actresses have naturally been involved with the film’s press tour, even earning a bit of a reputation on how emotional it has been.
One recent interview has especially gone viral thanks to a response shared by Erivo. During an interview for Out.com, reporter Tracy E. Gilchrist shared that “I’ve seen this week, people are taking the lyrics of ‘Defying Gravity’ and really holding space with that and feeling power in that.”
Erivo could then be seen holding her hand to her chest. The actress noted, “Uh, I didn’t know that that was happening.”
After Gilchrist noted, “I’ve seen it, yeah.” Erivo shared, “That’s really powerful, that’s what I wanted.” She could then be seen turning to Grande, who was sitting next to her, who then reached out and started holding Erivo’s finger.
The Reporter Even Talked About Becoming A ‘Meme’
The interview soon went viral after a video was posted on social media. As one user wrote, “I’m completely mesmerized by this clip .. it’s almost like they are speaking a language I don’t understand . I can’t catch the sense of it for a single moment. I’m not understanding the words or the feelings or the energy at all. It’s amazing.”
Another shared, “I can’t tell what my favorite part of this video is: the solemnity in announcing people have been ‘holding space’ for the lyrics of a 20 year old song, Cynthia acting like she personally wrote it, Ariana holding onto Cynthia’s index finger, or the reveal of ‘a couple of posts.'”

Gilchrist herself later spoke about the interview going viral, noting, “I never considered I’d become a meme.” She later continued, “But as an unrepentant showqueen.”
“I’m thrilled that it’s for something this campy, in response to a movie I love. Now go see Wicked!”
Wicked had its theatrical release on November 22, 2024. The film, which is being released in two parts, Wicked Part Two, is expected for release on November 21, 2025.
