New ‘Jeopardy!’ Category ‘Hard To Watch’ As Players Struggle
This week on Jeopardy!, there was a new category that had the players struggling at times. However, while the players weren’t sure of many of the answers, it had many viewers at home “cringing” at the struggle. Many others said it was “hard to watch” as the players seemed clueless about the category.
Here is what the clues pertained to and how many of the questions they actually got right.
Jeopardy! Players Struggle To Name Female Athletes
The Jeopardy! game on Wednesday saw the players end up stumped when the category came to “Great Women In Sports.” While sports is not always a category that players do well at, they seemed especially stumped when it came to naming great female athletes.
The questions saw one of the greatest of all time asking the questions. Billie Jean King was on video asking the questions. King is one of the best female tennis players in history, and even won a game against a male tennis player during her prime.
The first question was, “A star on four WNBA championship teams in Seattle, this woman became the league’s winningest player.” No one got the answer, “Who is Sue Bird?” correct. Bird played in the WNBA for 20 years, won four WNBA Championships, and is a five-time Olympic gold Medalist.
Up next was the clue, “A great all-around athlete, she excelled in many sports but later in life, golf was her game and she co-founded the LPGA.” Lois Dioro, a realtor from West Haven, Connecticut, got that right with, “Who is Babe Didrikson?”
Next was, “Before I switched to tennis, one of the sports I played was softball. One of the most decorated collegiate players of the game is this UCLA alum and two-time Olympic gold medalist.” No one knew this one either: “Who is Dot Richardson?”
“She was named Swimming World Magazine’s American Woman Swimmer of the Year 2013-2018, 2021, and 2022.” Evan Dorey, a data analytics director from Toronto, Ontario, got that right with “Who is Katie Ledecky?”
Finally, “In 2022, she laid her tennis racket down, stepping away from the sport with 23 Grand Slam singles titles to her name.” Evan also got that one right with “Who is Serena Williams?”
Jeopardy! Fans Bashed Players For Lack Of Knowledge
Viewers at home were not impressed with the players’ struggles in this category. Many of them realized that the players might have done better with male athletes and felt women deserved the same respect. However, it is also common for Jeopardy! players to miss most sports and pop culture questions.
Here is a look at some of the viewers’ responses to this Jeopardy! moment (via The U.S. Sun):
- “Sad they didn’t know more Great Women In Sports. Do better people!!!”
- “That Women in Sports category hurt to watch.”
- “Well, at least they got a few?”
