‘Today’ Jill Martin Breaks Silence On ‘Trauma’ From Cancer Battle
Jill Martin spoke out about her cancer battle on a Today segment this week. The lifestyle contributor wanted to explain the trauma that she still holds after the battle. She also had some things to say about what she is thankful for and what she learned while taking on this brave battle.
Here is what Jill said about her cancer battle.
Jill Martin Still Dealing With ‘Mental Trauma” After Cancer Battle
Jill Martin, 48, announced that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in a July 2023 Today telecast. It was a shocking diagnosis for the talk show star, and she has battled cancer over the last year. She said in her most recent appearance that she is now breast cancer-free, but she said that it still has ahold of her mentally.
“I’m so grateful to be cancer-free, but on the other hand, I just came out of a year of fog, and people look at me, and they think I look like myself,” Jill admitted. “To me, I look totally different, and my body’s totally different” (via YouTube). She said it is confusing, and she feels very different emotions simultaneously.
“I’ve spent the last year just trying to save my life,” Jill said. “And now, I’m dealing with the mental trauma of it all.”
Jill explained that this is something many survivors go through because they know the fight is never over. She finished chemotherapy and rang the bell, but she knows that this is something she will fight for her entire life. “I think about chemotherapy every single day,” she said.
However, she also said that she has a “rock” for her family at Today. She worked with her Today colleagues in Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and then she teamed with the WNBA and NBA to create pink versions of her clothing brand coats, which donates money to the Basser Center for BRCA.
Jill Martin Wants To Raise Awareness For Breast Cancer
While she is a survivor and dealing with trauma, Jill Martin also wants to give back. She wants to become a spokesperson to help raise breast cancer awareness and convince people to get tested.
“My year has been earth-shattering [for] my family, and it could have been avoided,” Jill said. “I got it because I did not get genetic testing in time. … It’s not just a history of breast cancer. Ask your doctor about genetic testing.”
Jill said that people are scared and don’t want to know. However, she said not knowing is worse because then they don’t catch it in time.
Mariska Hargitay was also on Today, and she joined in to praise Jill Martin for her brave battle. “I adore you and your strength is your beauty,” Mariska said.
