Some Bachelor Nation viewers told Jenn Tran she couldn’t be Bachelorette because she’s not American. (She is.) Now another troll claimed that she isn’t actually Asian. Find out how she responded to the diss.

Jenn Tran Proud Of Her Heritage

Jenn Tran’s announcement as the Season 21 Bachelorette came with the title of the first Asian-American lead in the history of the franchise. She spoke with bachelornation.com in May in honor of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage (AANHPI) Month.

She revealed that her parents were both in Vietnam and came to the United States before she was born. However, her brother was born in Vietnam before they immigrated. Jenn Tran told the outlet that she was “incredibly proud” of her Vietnamese background.

Jenn was open with her suitors about teaching her children Vietnamese culture and raising them in the Buddhist religion. She also told BN.com that there wasn’t a lot of Asian representation on television when she was growing up.

“To be here today and to be in this position and be able to inspire so many people — I’m so incredibly grateful.”

Trolls Claim Bachelorette Star Isn’t Actually Asian

Unfortunately, some Bachelor Nation viewers have revolted against an attempt to bring diversity to the franchise. Despite the fact that Jenn Tran was born and raised in New Jersey, a small group of viewers said she shouldn’t be the Bachelorette because she isn’t American.

Jenn Tran took to her Instagram Story to share recent hurtful comments about her on social media. One Bachelor Nation fan wrote that that ABC needs to “stop with the race crap” that Jenn Tran is the first Asian Bachelorette.

Another social media user agreed, claiming that Jenn Tran isn’t even Asian. “She is not Asian. She has Asian heritage. I am not European. I have European heritage,” they wrote.

Her Response

Jenn Tran shared a screenshot of the comments and included her thoughts. She wrote that she doesn’t like sharing the negative comments from viewers. However, these comments in particular were “upsetting” to her.

She added that the ones who wrote the comments have clearly never felt like an outsider like she and other POC often have. Jenn said that it is “so important” to celebrate other cultures because ignoring them makes them feel like they don’t matter.

Jesse Palmer pleaded with viewers to stop sending Bachelor stars hateful messages but clearly, some fans didn’t listen. Do you think Bachelor Nation viewers will ever accept diverse leads? Sound off in the comments.
