Julianne Hough Shares Difficult Feelings Behind Brooks Laich Split
DWTS hostess Julianne Hough is shedding light on her divorce from Brooks Laich.
In a series of new interviews, the professional dancer is opening up about painful chapters in her life. So far, she’s touched on difficult topics ranging from her childhood abuse to losing her two pets in a tragic accident.
Now, she’s speaking up about her decision to divorce Brooks Laich. See what she had to say in her latest interview.
Brooks Laich Healed Julianne Hough’s Inner Child
Professional dancer Julianne Hough and hockey player Brooks Laich began dating in 2013. They married on July 8, 2017, before separating in 2020. Their divorce was finalized in February 2022.
Even though their marriage didn’t work out, they didn’t seem to have an explosive, combative break-up. In fact, Julianne Hough had many positive things to say about her ex-husband in a new interview.
“What I needed at that time was to reconnect to my 10-year-old self,” the DWTS hostess shared on The Jamie Kern Lima Show. “And what did I need at 10? I really needed safety, and almost, like, a father figure to come in and be that grounding force of stability. And so I think a lot of our dynamic was this little girl feeling and this stability and stable man to be there. He provided such a beautiful foundation for me to be a little girl.”
While she appreciated the security Brooks Laich provided her, Julianne admitted she soon outgrew that and needed something else.
“I started becoming more of a woman,” the 36-year-old added. “And when that was happening, I was starting to listen to my voice more, not the 10-year-old voice that was making decisions subconsciously. And as that was happening, things started changing. I really started shifting and changing and questioning what I believed in.”
Ultimately, their differences drove them apart. During the pandemic, they quarantined separately and went on to officially divorce.
The Exes Still Maintain An Active Presence In Each Other’s Lives
Although she and the hockey player went on to divorce, Julianne asserts they are still very important to one another. Brooks was even a groomsman in Derek Hough’s wedding.
“We’ve had this conversation now that we wish we would have had the maturity to come together,” Julianne continued. “That there would have been potentially a different outcome, but I think everything has happened the way that it should have happened. We are very important, special people in each other’s lives, and we shared a really powerful season together.”
