A little piece of Hollywood history is gonna. The baseball field where A League Of Their Own and several other movies were filmed was decimated in a fire overnight. Just before midnight on Thursday, it was reportedly engulfed in flames. The 1930s ballpark was unable to be saved and there is an investigation underway. Here are the details.

Jay Littleton Ball Park Goes Up In Flames

Local reports say that the fire started at the Jay Littleton Ball Park in Ontario, California around 11:30 p.m. Firefighters responded to the scene, but the historic ballpark was already engulfed in flames.

The fire seemed to originate from the stadium and dugout, which was featured in films like A League Of Their Own. Unfortunately, nothing could be done to save the ballpark.

Photos from the scene showed the fire tearing through the stadium as firefighters attempted to put it out. It still isn’t clear as to how the fire got started. However, there is still a lot of old wood in the stadium. Older wood is dryer and burns more quickly, which is likely what led to the fire taking over the ballpark so quickly.

As mentioned above, an investigation has been opened into what caused the fire. Arson investigators were on the scene Friday morning. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

In 2022, the film (30 years old at the time) earned the number one spot on a list of the 20 highest-grossing baseball movies. Over the years, it has earned more than $100 million.

Prime Video gave A League Of Their Own its own series a few years ago, but it wasn’t a hit. TV critic Lauren Sarner said that it might be worth watching for die-hard fans of the film.

Jay Littleton Ball Park was also featured in several other Hollywood projects. Eight Men Out (1988) starring Charlie Sheen and Clifton James used the stadium for several scenes. John Goodman was on the baseball field starring as pro baseball legend Babe Ruth in The Babe (1992). It was also shown in an episode of The X-Files in 1999.

The ballpark was named a historic landmark in 2003 and is owned by the city of Ontario. After news of the fire broke, Aaron Matthiesen, the president of the Ontario Eastern Little League, spoke on the loss.

“This ballpark has been the heart of Ontario, it’s a historical ballpark, place to play for our kids,” he said. “Unfortunately, we’re not going to be able to get a chance to play in it anymore.”
