Country superstar Thomas Rhett has always been open about his love for his wife, Lauren, often gushing about their relationship in interviews and even featuring her in his music videos. But in a recent interview, Rhett revealed that their seemingly perfect marriage wasn’t immune to the pressures of fame.

Who Is Thomas Rhett’s Wife?

Thomas Rhett has known his now-wife, Lauren Akins, since they were in first grade. They married in 2012 when they were both 22. Within two years of their marriage, his career was skyrocketing. He earned his first number-one single, “It Goes Like This,” in 2013. The singer has had over 20 number-one songs since then.

His seventh album drops this week. About a Woman has a song that details his romance with Lauren. “What Could Go Right” tells how he confessed his feelings to his future wife.

“We were 21 years old and we were on her parents’ front porch, and I was like, ‘Hey, we’re either going to date or I can’t see your face for five years because I’ve been in love with you since I was 16. It was the first time we kissed, and we got engaged six months later.”

So, where did their marriage almost go wrong?

Many of Thomas Rhett’s songs have been inspired by his relationship with Lauren Akin. She’s even appeared in a few of the music videos. But he confessed to Us Weekly ahead of his album release that they hit a bumpy patch at one point in their marriage.

The singer and his wife have four daughters: Willa Gray, 8, Ada James, 6, Lennon Love, 4 and Lillie Carolina, 2. They adopted Willa Gray from Uganda when she was a toddler. Lauren was pregnant at the time.

Due to Uganda law, they had to live in the East African country for a year before the adoption could be finalized. Thomas Rhett also had career responsibilities in the U.S. at the same time.

“I’d go to Uganda and be husband and dad, and then go to America and be like, ‘OK, shows and music.’ I was internally imploding, and so was Lauren. We’d both come to these breaking points [feeling like] something has to give. It was not a fun time in our marriage.”

He credited his wife’s stubbornness and his own desire to be a ‘fixer’ as a reason why their marriage survived the stressful time. He also told Us Weekly that they are open to the idea of having a fifth child in the next few years.

Thomas Rhett’s new album comes out on Friday, August 23.
