Katie Couric Slams CBS For Replacing Norah O’Donnell With Two Men

Katie Couric is sounding off about CBS’ latest human resources decision. CBS Evening News host Norah O’Donnell announced that she would be leaving her post on the program after the election this year. She has been on CBS Evening News for 12 years. Fellow news anchor Katie Couric is more than a “little disappointed” about who CBS chose to replace her.

Katie Couric Isn’t Impressed With CBS’ Decisions

Norah O’Donnell is being replaced with two men and Katie Couric couldn’t roll her eyes harder at the decision. Katie hosted the CBS Evening News from 2006 to 2011 and couldn’t help but share her thoughts on the matter. The famed news anchor wrote a guest essay for The New York Times on Sunday, August 11.

In the essay, Katie spoke about CBS hiring Maurice DuBois and John Dickerson to take over Norah’s jobs as anchor and managing editor. While Katie says that she likes and respects both men, she’s not thrilled with the network’s decision.

“It was more than a little disappointing to read that Ms. O’Donnell would be replaced by two men, John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois,” she wrote. “Don’t get me wrong: I know, like and respect these two journalists.”

Despite liking both men, Katie Couric is concerned about men taking jobs from women in the news world. Not long ago, there weren’t many women news anchors. Now, Katie points out, the three big networks will have four male anchors.

She continued, “Yes, the talented Margaret Brennan will be contributing stories from the Washington bureau for CBS, but the two people who will be greeting Americans watching the CBS evening newscast will be men.”

CBS ‘Restructuring’ Seems Fake To Couric

What further concerns her, said Katie, is that the three people “behind the scenes” and making the majority of the editorial decisions will be “three white men.” She is referring to Bill Owens, Guy Campanile, and Jerry Cipriano. While she did have some praise for Jerry Cipriano, Katie Couric still believes the addition of more men into the newsroom isn’t ideal.

Katie’s main argument is that all news “needs a diverse group of journalists covering it.”

In the essay, she stated that “male writers occasionally have blind spots.” She believes this could impact how the news could potentially be dominated by a man’s point of view. Overall, this could affect how a “historic story” is approached. The example she used in her New York Times essay is the upcoming election and Kamala Harris’ run for president.

She also pointed out that CBS recently announced a “restructuring that introduces an additional layer of women executives.” However, the individuals leading the editorial decisions will still be men.

The network confirmed that Norah O’Donnell would be stepping down from her role as host of CBS Evening News following the 2024 election. She isn’t leaving the network though. Norah is going to become a senior correspondent and will continue to contribute to Evening News and other CBS programs.

“I have spent 12 years in the anchor chair here at CBS News, tied to a daily broadcast and the rigors of a relentless news cycle,” she shared in a statement last month. “It’s time to do something different.”
