There is a new season of So You Think You Can Dance underway. Over the past few years, the show has added new elements and shaken things up here and there to keep the show fresh. This season features significant changes, including having the top dancers perform in a variety of skill tests and challenges in order to stay on the show.

However, long-time fans of the show aren’t at all impressed with the new format. In fact, many yearn for the show’s earlier format and wish Fox would go back to the way things used to be.

What exactly are they saying? Keep reading to learn more.

SYTYCD Season 18 Is A Shell Of The Former Seasons

Changes for any reality television show are inevitable. However, SYTYCD fans think things have gone too far this year.

One of the biggest grievances about the changes this season is that there are no live episodes. In previous seasons, the show followed a format much like Dancing With The Stars. The contestants performed and viewers voted for their favorite performances. The bottom two dancers generally had to “dance for their life” and perform a solo to persuade the judges to keep them. The judges then chose a dancer to advance to the next week and one to eliminate.

Now that there are no live episodes, viewers have no say in choosing their favorite dancers.

And on top of that, the new format isn’t always necessarily about the dancing. This season has really focused on the dancer’s backgrounds and personal lives.

In previous seasons, this generally played a small role during the audition phase. After all, all reality shows love showcasing competitors with great stories to tell.

But fans think the new documentary-style competition is a bit bizarre — and many aren’t sure they’ll stick around to see the ending.

Viewers Express Their Outrage On Social Media

Over on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, plenty of SYTYCD fans expressed their annoyance with the new style.

I was willing to give the new #SYTYCD with its new format,” one user wrote. “But that was really disappointing. We’re getting cheated out of multiple dances, multiple styles, multiple choreographers, we’re not getting to know the contestants, and we’ve already lost one of the best dancers!”

Ugh… #sytycd was one of my favorite shows. And now they’ve ruined it. Disappointing. The best part was the performances… not 2 edited clips. eek @DANCEonFOX, swing and a miss,” another added.
