Guy Ritchie To Helm New ‘Ray Donovan’ Spinoff
Paramount+ has announced that after four years, Ray Donovan will be returning with a spinoff series directed by Guy Ritchie.
After seven seasons on Showtime, Ray Donovan was cancelled in 2020 despite an outcry from fans. In an attempt to give the series a proper goodbye, Showtime produced Ray Donovan: The Movie in 2022. But like an ex you just can’t quite walk away from, Ray Donovan is getting another chance.
On February 28, Paramount+ announced that The Donovans will hit its streaming service in late 2024. The Ray Donovan spinoff will be available to subscribers with the Paramount+ with Showtime plan. The series is being penned by Top Boy creator, Ronan Bennett. Guy Ritchie will serve as the series director, as well as executive producer.
Details Behind The New Ray Donovan Spinoff
The series will set its sights on the criminal underbelly in London. “With the most powerful clients in Europe, The Donovans will see family fortunes and reputations at risk,” reads the show’s official synopsis. “Odd alliances unfold, and betrayal around every corner. And while the family might be London’s most elite fixers today, the nature of their business means there is no guarantee what’s in store tomorrow.”
Chris McCarthy, President of Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios, spoke about the partnership between Ritchie and Bennett. “Guy Ritchie and Ronan Bennett are the ideal dream team to create a new global hit franchise with The Donovans,” said McCarthy. “Guy’s riveting and stylish directorial approach combined with Ronan’s captivating and brutally authentic writing will transfix audiences into a wild and twisted world full of new adventures.”
David C. Glasser, CEO of 101 Studios, also believes Ritchie and Bennett are the perfect duo to deliver a promising series. “We’re elated to partner with Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios to reimagine the Ray Donovan legacy together,” said Glasser. “Having Guy and Ronan sign on to join us on this incredible journey has been a true blessing. We could not be more thrilled to take this huge hit and create a new and exciting show for audiences all over the world.”
The Past, Present, and Future Of Ray Donovan
Originally created by Ann Biderman, Ray Donovan debuted on Showtime in 2013. The series found itself a dedicated following throughout its seven-season run. The show starred Liev Schreiber as the titular character. Eddie Marsan, Dash Mihok, and Jon Voight rounded out the bulk of the Donovan family.
As of now, it is unclear if The Donovans will feature the same cast. According to Bennett, he remains focused on keeping the spirit of Ray Donovan alive and well. “I’m thrilled to be working with Showtime, Paramount+ and 101 Studios. We’re going to deliver a show which provides massive thrills, entertainment, and a huge rush of adrenaline for audiences around the world,” Bennett said in a statement. “At the same time, I’m totally focused on exploring real characters, in body and in soul.”
For Bennett, he aims to keep the drama flowing through his Ray Donovan spinoff. “I’m committed to writing stories with deep dramatic impact. We’re going to get under the skin of the criminal underworld. In a way which will show you the bone-deep truths of how they live and how it sometimes will inevitably impact on our own lives.”
