‘My 600-Lb. Life’: Why Do Some Patients Forgo Skin Removal Surgery?
After a successful bariatric surgery, many My 600-Lb. Life participants go on to get skin removal surgery too. The procedure is largely for cosmetic purposes — many patients just don’t feel comfortable with the excess skin after they lose weight.
But what are some reasons that a patient might forgo skin removal surgery? Keep reading to see what some fans online thought.
Not all My 600-Lb. Life guests go on to have cosmetic procedures too
Weight loss is always a deeply personal decision. So are any medical procedures that might go along with that. So it goes without saying that skin removal surgery might not be for everyone.
But why should some people choose not to pursue this option? Redditors recently took a deep dive here.
“Facial skin removal?” the original poster wrote online. “Tonight’s question (based on watching a LOT of Where Are They Now) is why so many patients who end up with large amounts of hanging skin on their face don’t have it removed? I understand that it’s more cosmetic than the functionality of needing an apron belly skin flap removed, but the hanging double chin skin would drive me out of my mind! I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone have this skin removed. Weird!”
Other users had an easy response to this — skin removal surgeries can be wildly expensive.
“Neck lifts are about $6000. Deeper involved ones can be up to $30,000,” a Redditor replied. “Some neck specialist comes up on my Instagram every few days.”
Many My 600-Lb. Life guests have the cost of their bariatric surgery covered by TLC. But the network may not be willing to pay for subsequent cosmetic procedures like excess skin removal. A surgery like this just isn’t in the budget for many American households.
Other users argued that the initial bariatric surgery would likely be covered by insurance since it’s considered a “life-saving” procedure. But excess skin removal is likely just cosmetic, so insurance most likely wouldn’t pay for it.
When will TLC give fans more content?
TLC hasn’t given any real answers about the future of My 600-Lb. Life or Where Are They Now? But one thing is clear — fans want new episodes.
“I haven’t seen a schedule published yet. Do we know when we can expect the newest batch of WATNs?” the a Redditor wrote in a different thread. “Feels like it’s been forever since the regular season ended.”
Some other viewers seemed to think that COVID-19 really messed up the production schedule and plans for future seasons. TLC may still put out new episodes of both shows. It just may be some time until fans can watch new content whenever they please.
