Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey documents the horrors and abuse within the FLDS cult
The term “FLDS” stands for the “Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.” It’s a branch of Mormon extremism that broke away from the mainstream Mormon church in the early 1900s.
The movement began as a way for followers to practice plural marriage and other religious beliefs without fear of persecution from the mainstream Mormon church. However, over the past 100 years, things wildly spiraled out of control.
When Rulon Jeffs came into power, he started taking on child brides, some as young as 14. At the time of Rulon’s death in 2002, it was reported that he had about 75 wives and 65 children. After Rulon’s death, his son Warren took over. And things grew worse from there.
Warren Jeffs was known as “The Prophet” to members of his church. And they fully believed he was a living god on earth.
Under Warren Jeffs’ rule, young women and even young girls were forced into marriage by their parents. As the documentary puts it, the women and girls in the FLDS church were treated as commodities and traded around between “lecherous” old men.
Two former members of the church describe their wedding days. The girls were only 14-years-old at the time and Warren Jeffs forced them to marry men who were much older than they were. Protesting did nothing — they were only scolded and threatened by their prophet.
Thankfully, many of the victims did manage to escape the FLDS in time. But sadly, many of their loved ones remain in the group to this day. Many of the former church members have no way to contact their loved ones and don’t even know if they are still living.
Where is Warren Jeffs today?
Authorities arrested Warren Jeffs in 2006. He’s currently serving a life sentence plus 20 years for his horrific crimes, including sexual abuse of minors himself. But that doesn’t mean his reign of terror is over.
As described in Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey, many members of the FLDS firmly believe that Jeffs is innocent. They believe it’s only a matter of time before he leaves prison and returns to power. And every day, they pray for his return.
Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey is available to stream on Netflix right now. If you want to see the trailer, you can do that here:
