Learning Tammy Slaton was hospitalized with carbon dioxide poisoning caused some 1000-Lb. Sisters fans to wonder if she might’ve tried to commit suicide. Fortunately, as we previously reported, it is highly unlikely for that to be the case. Turns out, this type of health issue is something that just happens to individuals struggling with obesity. How Did Tammy Slaton Get Carbon Dioxide Poisoning?
Fortunately, as we previously reported, there were a lot of respiratory therapists that chimed in on the news of Tammy Slaton being hospitalized with carbon dioxide poisoning. Carbon dioxide poisoning isn’t that common. It is much more common for someone to suffer from carbon monoxide poisoning. That, however, isn’t exactly true for someone who is morbidly obese.
Turns out, what Tammy Slaton was likely suffering from is actually a condition called obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS).
1000-Lb. Sisters: What Is Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome (OHS)?
Chatter in a thread on Reddit about Tammy Slaton’s TikTok video and hospitalization did a pretty good job at covering the difference between carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide poisoning. The chatter also reassured fans it is highly unlikely that Tammy was in the hospital because she tried to commit suicide.
When a person is overweight, they do not clear all of the carbon dioxide out of their lungs the same way an average-sized individual does. Over time, this can cause too much of it to accumulate in their lungs. This, in turn, can cause the poisoning that Tammy suffered from.
According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, “The syndrome causes you to have too much carbon dioxide and too little oxygen in your blood. Without treatment, it can lead to serious and even life-threatening health problems.”
Medical experts are not sure why Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome (OHS) affects some overweight individuals but not others. There, however, is some speculation that people with excess fat on their neck and chest are more prone to developing it because they may have a more difficult time breathing.
Typically, someone with OHS gets prescribed a CPAP device to sleep with to ensure they are getting enough oxygen while they are sleeping.
