Will ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Ratings Drop Now That Carole Is Out?
Dancing With the Stars Season 29 has seen a boost to the ratings from the previous seasons. New host, Tyra Banks, has hit back at fans who are calling for Tom Bergeron to come back, saying that clearly the show is doing something right. Is it the show or was it the fact that a certain Tiger King personality was on the series?
Most TV shows will see a drop in the live ratings from one week to another. That’s been the case for the dancing competition over the years, but Dancing With the Stars Season 29 premiered to a 26% increase in the demo and a steady total audience compared to the Season 28 premiere, according to TV Series Finale. While the second week saw a dip, the third week ticked up. Banks sees it as a win, but it’s important to look at the reasons for the potential uptick. Is the show doing something right?
Was Carole Baskin the Reason for the Higher Ratings?
While the ratings are up from the previous season, there are a few factors at play. One of those is that a lot of people admitted to tuning in to watch Carole Baskin perform. Whether she was good or not, viewers wanted to see how many cat or tiger songs she could dance to. All three weeks there was something feline about her performances, despite her saying mentions of Tiger King were difficult for her.
The Tiger King celebrity left the series during Disney Night. It will be interesting to see if the ratings take a hit with her exit. However, there are some excellent celebrities on the show.

A Very Different Fall for TV
It’s also important to consider the lack of competition when it comes to the live ratings for ABC this fall. Fall TV is usually filled with returning and new scripted shows, with Monday nights usually packed with comedy on CBS and FOX’s big dramas like Prodigal Son and 9-1-1. Due to the pandemic, FOX opted to run its summer shows in the fall, taking the pressure off filming the usual fall suspects. CBS opted for Love Island, which usually airs in the summer. The CW and NBC shows haven’t returned yet.
With little competition on the other networks, viewers will tune into the reality series on ABC. People want new and fresh content after five months of reruns.
As networks start to bring their shows back, the live ratings could see a drop. It’s worth keeping an eye on things in the coming weeks. Banks may not want to get too complacent just yet.
