Dogs are known for being well-trained companions for police, from detecting narcotics and explosives to helping to find missing people. However, even regular household pets can prove helpful to authorities. In fact, one dog in Illinois recently proved helpful towards police, even helping in its own rescue.

Officers Entered The House & Found A Furry Friend Behind A Pet Gate

On September 11, 2025, the Aurora Police Department and Aurora Fire Department responded to reports of a house fire in Whitehall Court at just around 12:51 PM local time. Officers noticed flames near the rear of the home.

Authorities tried to determine if there was anyone inside the home at the time. Two investigators, Michael Ely and Jacob Leonard, had to force their way inside.

It was then that the officers met Oakley, a 4-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier living at the residence. Oakley was found behind a pet gate.

Ely removed the pet gate as smoke and alarm sounds filled the room. He then tried to grab Oakley’s collar, but the dog moved down the hallway. However, he quickly paused to make sure Ely was following him.

Oakley was leading the officers to his leash before being led himself out of the door. Finding the leash in the kitchen, Oakley was dubbed a “good boy” for the assist.

There was no one else inside the home at the time. Authorities later confirmed that there were no injuries reported from the fire. It is also believed that the fire started in the attic and that there were no signs of foul play.

Taking to Facebook, the Aurora Illinois Police Department later shared body cam footage of Oakley helping the officers in his rescue. Included in the post was a statement from Oakley’s owners, who wished to remain anonymous.

Commenters Were Quick To Call Oakley A ‘Good Boy’ On Social Media

The statement, which explained a bit about Oakley’s history, read, “Oakley is an American Staffordshire Terrier. He is a rescue dog from a local organization called Players for Pits. He was adopted as a puppy by our family.”

The statement continued, “He is 4 years old and is an athletic dog who loves to play and wrestle. He enjoys snuggling with us, snoring loudly as he sleeps, sunbathing, and eating peanut butter. We are forever grateful to Mike at the Aurora Police Department for saving our sweet dog.”

Chief Matt Thomas also shared, “I’m proud of the way our officers handled this situation. [Their] quick response made a real difference, and it’s always rewarding when we can return a family member — even a four-legged one — safely to their loved ones.”

On social media, many shared their reactions to the body cam footage. Quite a few were also quick to call Oakley a “good boy.” Some comments included:

  • “That’s a good boy! He wouldn’t leave the house without his leash!”
  • “The bestest boy deserves a big steak.”
  • “He said hold on we can’t leave without my leash. Omg so precious. Just goes to show how innocent they are.”
  • “Animals are extraordinary beings, and it baffles me how anyone could treat them with anything but love and compassion.”
