Bill Murray was recently filmed in New York having a surprising altercation with a fan. At the time, Murray appeared to be in the area to help promote an upcoming film. Notably, the person who recorded the video has also shared some insight into what happened.

The Video Was Taken At A New York City Theatre Back In March

Murray first came to fame while appearing on Saturday Night Live from 1977 to 1980. Over the years, he had appeared in a variety of films, including Caddyshack, Groundhog Day, Scrooged, Ed Wood, and Ghostbusters. Notably, he’s also reprised his Ghostbusters character, Dr. Peter Venkman, in a variety of media.

In the early 2000s, Murray became known for his collaborations with director Wes Anderson, such as Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and The Grand Budapest Hotel. He also notably appeard in Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation. He also served as the voice of the titular cat in Garfield: The Movie and Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties.

As noted by Fox 5 DC, a video of Murray has popped up on social media, showcasing an altercation with a fan. According to the publication, the video appeared to be taken on March 27 at AMC’s Lincoln Square theater in New York City.

As the video shows, a person appeared to be following closely behind Murray. At one point, the actor stopped walking and pointed a finger in the person’s face.

Murray could reportedly be heard saying, “If you attack me like that again, I’ll step on your foot. Don’t do it. That’s a physical assault.”

A guard appeared to escort Murray away, while the fan appeared to apologize for what happened. Murray continued, “Don’t do it again. You’re not big enough to do that.”

Bill Murray May Have Been In The Area To Promote His Upcoming Film, The Friend 

According to the publication, Anton Gerasimenko, who reportedly captured the video, noted that Murray refused to take photos or sign autographs. He shared, “One fan ignored the refusal and tried to take a photo with Bill in the background. The first attempt failed, and inside the theater, the fan tried again, accidentally bumping into Bill.”

It’s believed that Murray was at the theatre as part of a Q&A promotion for the upcoming movie, The Friend, which is based on the Sigrid Nunez novel of the same name. The film, which also features Naomi Watts, Constance Wu, Sarah Pidgeon and Carla Gugino, came out on April 4.

With the video released on TikTok, many fans are sharing their own reactions to the video. Some shared their own personal experiences with Murray. A few comments included:

  • “I was at a Cubs game, Bill Murray sat in front of us, he bought us a round of beers because we would stop fans from harassing him. Great guy!”
  • “I’m on Bills side like damn give the guy some space.”
  • “Step on foot? That’s the most savage threat I have ever heard!”
  • “Bill Murray isn’t perfect, but everyone that I have known that has met him as had nothing but awesome things to say. Also, Bill is from the south side of Chicago…. So he ain’t no punk.”
