News has come out that Bill Flay, the father of Food Network icon Bobby Flay, has passed on. In life, Bill was known as a navy veteran and lieutenant. Bill’s family has shared the news, as well as what Bill was like, on social media. Notably, a few Food Network personalities also shared their condolences.

Food Network Star Bobby Flay’s Father Bill Was A Navy Lieutenant

Bobby Flay is a celebrity chef and television personality. The son of Bill and Dorothy Barbara Flay, Bobby himself has a daughter named Sophie from his second wife, Kate Connelly.

It was recently reported that Bill, a former Navy lieutenant, had passed away this past Sunday. A celebration of life ceremony is planned for the vet in the coming weeks.

Sophie shared the sad news in a recent Instagram post. The news had been revealed the following Tuesday.

In the carousel post, Sophie shared photos and even a video of her grandfather. The first photo showed Bill enjoying ice cream. Most of the photos showed Bill posing alongside her grandfather.

Sophie shared in the caption, “My grandfather was my whole world. He was a Navy Lieutenant who spoke four languages. He adored and believed in education.”

Sophie continued, “He was never underdressed. If we weren’t together on my birthday, he’d put on a button down shirt and blazer just for FaceTime.”

However, Sophie assured her grandfather had his jovial side. She noted, “He was the biggest jokester and always had a bit going. If there were profiteroles on the menu, he ordered them.”

Sophie also painted her grandfather as a Renaissance man and a man of culture. However, she noted he also like to keep up with trends. She noted, “A lover of the opera, ballet and art history. A big fan of Andrea Bocelli, Christina Aguilera and Nicki Minaj.”

“He loved the Premiere League and the New York Mets. He always had the new iPhone and really wanted to make sure the last one he got had AI capabilities.”

As she concluded her post, Sophie noted, “We never just walked down the street, we always had some sort of silly dance incorporated into each step. Giving a wave or a hello to passersby. Bill Flay charmed everyone he met.”

Various Food Network personalities also shared their condolences. Television personality Lauren Scala shared her condolences. She shared, “He was an incredible man. I’m so sorry Sophie. Sending you so much love.”

Junk Food Flip co-host Nikki Dinki also noted, “Sounds like the best of the best. I’m sure he will forever be remembered and treasured. Thinking of you and your family.”

For his part, as noted by People, Bobby was known for being close with his father. He had celebrated his father in a recent Father’s Day post. As he shared, “Happy Father’s Day, Bill Flay… the greatest father, grandfather, friend, and role model. to me and all who know him.”
