‘Antiques Roadshow’ Guest Shares Gift From Brooke Shields

Guests on Antiques Roadshow often bring all sorts of surprising items to be evaluated. In fact, one guest brought an item connected to a well-known Hollywood actress: Brooke Shields.
Brooke Shields Gifted A Dress, But With A Slight Catch
Brooke Shields got her start at a young age, being a child model since before she was a year old. She gained widespread fame when appearing in Pretty Baby at the age of 12.
In the 1980s, Shields become known for her roles in The Blue Lagoon and Endless Love. Since then, she’s appeared in a large number of films and television appearances.
Notably, from 2017 to 2018, Shields had a recurring role on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. In the 1990s, she also starred in her own sitcom, Suddenly Susan.
As noted by The U.S. Express, Shields once got name-dropped on the U.S. version of Antiques Roadshow thanks to a gift she shared with a co-worker. The guest had received a gift from Shields while working on the Broadway production of Grease.
The publication described the dress as “a Bob Mackie beaded gown made for the 1980s icon.” The guest was quoted as saying, “I acquired this from a client of mine. I’m a hairdresser and I was working with Brooke Shields in New York on the Broadway production of Grease.”
The guest continued, “At the end of her run on that show, she surprised me by coming in the dressing room and she pulled this gown out.” He then shared that the actress “told me that if I could fit into it and wear it before she left the show, I could have it.”
This inspired the guest to give Shields a bit of a surprise. They noted, “So her last night of the show, at curtain call, I got dressed up and, much to her surprise, gave her a beautiful bouquet of white flowers, all dressed up in her dress.”
The Guest Later Got To Meet The Dress’ Original Designer
The guest noted he received a few signatures thanks to the dress. He noted that Shields herself “was kind enough to autograph it for me.” He later added, “A few weeks later, I met designer Mackie at a benefit event where he autographed the dress.”
In fact, that wasn’t the only gift the guest got from Mackie. He shared, “He also offered him a copy of the sketch he had done for the gown and presented a picture of himself alongside Shields wearing the dress.”

The guest spoke well of Shields, sharing, “She is absolutely one of the most charming, professional, giving people I’ve ever worked with.” He continued, “She was always working to improve and make herself better in the world…She’s very down to earth but also, at the same time.”
The Autographs Were Faded, But Could Increase The Dress’ Value
Expert Steven Porterfield evaluated the dress, noting Mackie’s career, especially his work for The Carol Burnett Show, among various stars. He noted, “This dress was actually made for Brooke Shields in the 1980s.”
Porterfield added, “You have this amazing dress that has not only Bob Mackie’s label in it, but also his signature. Also got Brooke’s signature.” While the autographs appeared a bit faded, Porterfield assured the dress was already valuable.
The expert noted, “Well, just being a Bob Mackie gown, a gown like this sells on the secondary market for $1,000 to $1,500.” However, the autographs could increase its value.
Porterfield noted, “But there’s a big difference in this, because you have a signature from Brooke. You have the signature of Bob Mackie, and you have this wonderful illustration.”
Porterfield surmised, “All put together, that creates a wonderful part of fashion history. And so, at auction, I would believe that this would probably bring $7,500.”
This caused Porterfield to muse, “So isn’t that a great gift?” The guest responded with gratitude, “That’s the best gift ever, thanks Brooke.”
