The Rookie has some new cast members this year. One of them is Patrick Keleher, who plays rookie Seth. While it was exciting to see Lucy (Melissa O’Neil) get a new rookie to train, there were things he began to do that made him overly suspicious to long-time viewers of the show.

O’Neil talked about the newcomer and how these things often take time to play out, especially with new characters not always playing out the storylines of old. Here is what she had to say about Seth and Lucy’s partnership on the police procedural.

Melissa O’Neil Talks Seth’s Journey On The Rookie

Patrick Keleher joined The Rookie this season as one of the LAPD’s new rookies. He plays Seth, and his character ends up placed with Lucy to train. However, as the season has worn on, Lucy realizes that Seth might be more troublesome than he is worth.

“It goes off the rails really fast,” Melissa O’Neil said about the newcomer Seth (via Us Weekly). She said her character of Lucy is “constantly suspicious and questioning what’s going on with him.” This all came down to lies and stories he told that she had learned that were not completely true.

O’Neil said that Lucy gives everyone the benefit of the doubt until they prove otherwise. However, Seth is pushing her way too far with his dishonesty and seemingly fake outward behavior. She said that Lucy trusts Seth at first, but his innocent manner and saying all the right things doesn’t seem right in this show’s world.

What Has Seth Done Wrong On The Rookie?

Seth proved that Lucy’s trust in The Rookie might have been displaced. He was assigned to Lucy as her new “boot” as she works as a training officer. However, his sweet demeanor turns out to be hiding something, although Lucy is still unsure what is happening with the rookie.

Seth lies a lot. Lucy caught him in several lies, most of which had something to do with his past. He threw up when they found a criminal who had overdosed in his car. When explaining himself, he told Lucy that his girlfriend overdosed in high school, and this brought back memories.

He later told another officer that his girlfriend died in a car crash to explain why he froze up at an accident scene. Lucy heard both stories and wanted to know the truth. She contacted Seth’s high school guidance counselor and learned both stories were true. However, neither girl was Seth’s girlfriend; they were just fellow students.

Lucy asks Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) for help and wants to handle things on her own without turning Seth into their boss, Grey (Richard T. Jones). After she kicks him out of the training program and he says his cancer has returned, she has to figure out if anything he says is truthful.
