HGTV’s ‘Betting On Paradise’ Called Out As ‘Fake’

A new home renovation show called Betting on Paradise arrived on HGTV. However, many fans were turned off by a lot of things happening in the reality TV series. Several pointed out that certain things had to be staged and faked and it made them want to turn it off.
Here is what people are saying about the HGTV reality series and why it seems to be faking the drama.
What Is Betting On Paradise On HGTV?
Betting on Paradise is a new renovation show on HGTV. On this reality TV series, married couple Steph Sitt and Luke Shantz gamble all their money to achieve their dreams of turning a shabby Costa Rican motel into a luxurious tropical oasis. However, they end up faced with several renovation disasters that threatens to ruin their dream.

Sitt and Shantz moved from Canada to Costa Rica. They did so despite never even visiting the Central American country. They took their two kids (Mia, 10 and Luna, 8) and decided they wanted to move to to refurbish a hotel.
Steph said she grew up in Toronto while Luke was raised on the shores of Lake Huron. They met when they were both working as teachers in Taiwan. They were then a couple for 18 years before they decided to get married after buying the hotel in Costa Rica.
“We felt the universe was giving us a nudge,” Luke said. He worked in construction and landscaping background while Steph worked in the hospitality industry for years. The two brought that experience with them to Costa Rica, but things began to spiral out of control.
However, Luke said they live by a mantra: “You can fail at what you don’t want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.”
Why Do Fans Feel Betting On Paradise Is Faked?
Fans took to Reddit to slam the HGTV show. When explaining why they hated it, the OP wrote that it “Started ok, but now it’s SO FAKE.” They went on to describe scenes where they said they were over budget and had to get loans. However, they keep expanding despite losing money.

Fans in the comments said the show was a flop and bashed it as well:
- “Apparently the show was a flop, as evidence of HGTV moving it to a weekday time spot.”
- “Claiming you’re hundreds of thousands over budget, and then tile shopping for handmade very expensive tile was a bad choice.”
- “I saw the final episode yesterday and they show the husband trying to convince his wife to buy another Costa Rican property, obviously for a season 2 that will almost certainly never come.”
