‘Shark Tank’ Kevin O’Leary Reveals His Humiliation Of Being Fired

He is a straight shooter who tells people like it is whether they want to hear the truth or not. But, recently, he vulnerably revealed the deep humiliation he felt after getting fired from his job.

While Shark Tank investor and Canadian businessman, Kevin O’Leary may have a tough exterior, he shared an experience on Facebook about the uncomfortable feeling he got after being fired. Although some Redditors have called him out for constantly yelling and shouting at entrepreneurs, other people recognize he can be both “awesome” and “an a**hole” at the same time. Undoubtedly, even if it is humiliating to hear, Kevin steers clear of empty platitudes and instead gets his point across before investing in new projects. But one thing is for certain: Kevin owns his “brand” as a person.

On Facebook, Shark Tank investor, Kevin O’Leary reveals how his humiliation after his firing from his first job. It shows during a Fox News interview, Kevin spoke about working at an ice cream shop. He explains he was in high school and had a thing for the girl who worked at the shoe shop located across from the ice cream shop. Kevin says, “The plan was when I finished scooping, we would go out on a date…So she’s watching me, and then, at the end, the woman who owns the store comes over to me and says, ‘Listen, you have gotta take all of the gum off the tiles.'”

It was a pivotal point when Kevin was looking at the girl across the way, knowing how it would appear if he was down on his knees cleaning floors. He says, “That’s not a brand for me.” Knowing it would look bad, he told his boss, “You hired a scooper, not a scraper.” But he recalls her replying, “‘No, no, no. You’re gonna do whatever I say I own the store.'” But even at his young age, he was adamant that it wasn’t for him. He adds, “I said, ‘I’m not doing it.’ She said, ‘You’re fired.'” He had never had a job, nor had he been fired. To have both happen on the same day was difficult to process. When he was relaying the news to his mom, he noted it was beyond humiliating to explain.
Kevin O’Leary Used Humiliation To Fuel His Future
But Shark Tank investor, Kevin O’Leary asserts, “That was the last time I ever worked for anybody.” He found the entire interaction humbling; he says, “It was so humiliating.” But it changed the trajectory of his whole life. Jumping on his bike to return home to tell his mom made him reevaluate the situation. He clearly saw there were two types of people in the world: the store owners and the floor scrapers. He knew he had to be an owner. But he adds, “I’m not saying that it’s bad to be an employee, but I don’t know how to do it.” Furthermore, he knows it was the driving force behind his choice of entrepreneurship.
While Kevin doesn’t say how his mom reacted at the time, she was a big influence on his learning. In another interview, he mentions she told him after completing college, there would be “no more checks.” She was cutting him off after paying for his education and rent. He recalls her explaining, “The dead bird under the nest never learns how to fly.” She gave him support and comfort but then reminded him the time had come to figure it out on his own.
