When it comes to reality television, fans often wonder what is real and what isn’t. Deadliest Catch fans have recently started to debate what’s real on the shipping vessels and what’s just for show. Recently, fans took to social media to discuss the issue.

Some Fans Felt The Deadliest Catch Became Too Reliant On Drama

Deadliest Catch first came out in 2005. Through the series, viewers can a look at crab fishing vessels during dangerous fishing seasons.

Viewers have seen all sorts of conflict upon the high waters, including cast-members in various life-or-death situations. However, as of late, some have been wondering just how true the series is to life.

Taking to Reddit, one fan recently asked, “My husband and I watched this show when it started. We watched for 10 or so seasons and then lost interest and stopped for several years. He recently decided to start watching it again.”

However, the fan admitted the series started to catch them off-guard. As they shared, “He started over from the beginning and is currently on Season 19. And I CANNOT BELIEVE how insanely scripted this show has gotten! Hired actors, faking drama, exaggerating accidents/tragedies, scripted lines… even some of the original captains are acting in scenes.”

Some Fans Agreed There Was A Turning Point When The Show Began To Shift

“What the hell happened to this show?! It’s not even subtle. You can clearly see the progression of fake, scripted bullshit more and more as you make your way through the seasons. It’s not even entertaining to watch anymore. Shame on Discovery for ruining a really good show.”

Other fans took to the comments and shared similar feelings. As with the original fan, many agreed there was some sort of “progression” to the issue, with the show feeling less genuine as it went on. A few used the passing of Captain Phil Harris as a marking point for the change in the series.

Some felt that the issue was that the series began to focus less on actual crabbing and more on various behind-the-scenes drama as it went on. Some comments included:

  • “It became obvious sometime after Phil Harris’ death that the show was stoking drama and likely behaving in extremely unethical ways. It also very clearly started transitioning from something like a documentary to a reality show and then to a heavily scripted reality show.”
  • “Shifting the focus almost entirely to the captains was also a pretty bleh move that, even ignoring everything else wrong with the show, really made it a much less interesting watch.”
  • “I’m doing a rewatch, currently on season 8. Everyone says that the show got bad after Phil died, and it’s absolutely true. I’m at the point where I don’t even really want to watch it anymore. It went from a show about crab fishing to a show about family/ personal drama with a little fishing sprinkled in.”
  • “I did the same. I went back to a season or two [before] stopped watching it last time, and I got through 3 seasons and gave up again.”
