The Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions is supposed to pit the best against the best for the biggest prize of the year. However, fans are worried about the tournament after the first game opened with a terrible outing. The entire game was horrible, with 15 triple stumpers and 18 wrong answers. Many fans wondered if things were going to get better.

Here is a look at the terrible start to the ToC 2025 event.

Jeopardy! Tournament Opens With Big Losses

On Tuesday, January 28, the Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions saw David Erb, a puzzle designer from Seattle, Washington, Grant DeYoung, a delivery driver from Prescott, Arizona, and Amy Hummel, an ER doctor from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, go to battle each other.

The game was tough from the start. At the first break, David led the game with only $1,800. Amy had $800, and Grant had $600. Entering DJ, the game was closer, with David at $3,000, Grant at $2,800, and Amy at $2,200. Entering FJ, David had $7,200, Amy had $6,600, and Grant had $3,200.

The Final Jeopardy! clue was, “This 7-digit date saw the premiere of Handel’s “Water Music.” No one got it right (“What is 7/17/1717?”). Amy ended up winning, with $6,401 compared to David’s $1,199 and David’s $399. Amy seemed shocked when she won after losing for most of the game. However, her soft bid won it.

Fans Say It Was The ‘Saddest’ Jeopardy! Game Ever

Fans on Reddit were shocked at how bad the scoring was in this game. With so many triple stumpers and missed answers, it was a shock that anyone won the game.

Here is a sample of the disappointment that the game show’s fans felt:

  • “Will this TOC ever get better? It seems like it has gotten off to one of the saddest (not worst) starts to a TOC ever, with fan favorites such as Alison and David gone.”
  • “Wow, brutal game. Hopefully tomorrow’s game is better.”
  •  “This seemed like a pretty rough game. Have there been any other TOC games in the past where no one had a pre FJ total that was 5 digits?”

There was another Redditor who pointed out an interesting fact about Grant Young. They said he had 10 incorrect answers in this game. His record was 11 wrong answers on May 20. They then pointed out that, during his win streak in the regular season, he averaged seven wrong answers a game and still won four times, including the one where he missed 11.

Amy Hummel joins Will Wallace, Neilesh Vinjamuri, Ryan Manton, and Mark Fitzpatrick as five of the six first-rounders to move on to the semifinals. The last first-round game is next Monday.
