Fans Say Kody Brown Deserves Same Grace As Wives?

On Reddit, some Sister Wives fans discuss how it can be difficult to give grace to Meri, Janelle, Christine, Robyn, and Kody Brown. Seeing the dysfunction they lived through for so many years, but then watching them still have many material things has one fan questioning why people “feel sorry” for them.

But other people understand that Meri, Janelle, and Christine Brown endured a lot during the plural marriage. They believed they were following God’s will and wanted polygamy to be their testimony.

  • One user points out, “When you realize the women were in an abusive cult of misogyny, that’s when you should feel sorry for the wives.”
  • Another person then wonders, “I agree but then my overactive brain starts thinking well, should Kody get the same grace? He got about the same level of indoctrination as Janelle. I can’t really come up with a reason why he shouldn’t be given that consideration. Someone please give me a reason because he’s the worst and I really don’t want to feel sorry for him.
  • Someone explains it is good to extend “understanding of how he came to be.” But someone else adds, “You can be both a victim and abuser.”

What Is Fair?

Unmistakably, Sister Wives shows that each member of the plural marriage had their strengths and weaknesses. A huge portion of the crumbling came down to communication and trust. Although they were all in it together, some fans justify that Kody Brown has a larger part of the burden to bear.

  • Another person explores giving Kody Brown grace. They say, “It’s not a popular opinion, but you have a point. He was raised in a culture that puts men on a pedestal and subjugates women. Of course, he’s bitter. He was told if you XYZ life will be great and God will take care of you. It’s a huge blow to a person’s sense of self when you come to realize that you’ve been sold a pile of BS and you fell for it. I do believe he felt pressured to take on more wives and create more children by his religion. And the way he thinks about women and treats them is a direct reflection of what he’s been brought up to believe. It’s sad for everyone.”

  • But another user sees the religion doesn’t treat them fairly and questions why should anyone else. They say, “If the cult abused and mistreated the men like the women, then I might agree. Each polygamist husband is the high priest of his family. He gets to make all the rules. It’s not an equal playing field in any way at all. The men have all the power.”
  • “Oh, I agree. But it’s not right to teach them that that’s how a healthy relationship works.”

What do you think? Should people extend more grace to Kody Brown? Can you imagine living through what Kody, Meri, Janelle, Christine, and Robyn Brown have been through? Are you ready to see more episodes of Sister Wives? Drop your comments below.
