‘Deadliest Catch’ What Happened To Captain Murray?

It’s not too uncommon for vessels to change captains on Deadliest Catch. However, recently, fans have been wondering what happened to one captain in particular. On social media, some fans had been asking about Captain Murray Gamrath, known for working with Phil Harris aboard the F/V Cornelia Marie.
Captain Murray Served As A Seasonal Captain On Deadliest Catch
On the series, Gamrath served on, and later becoming action captain of, the F/V Cornelia Marie. Introduced in the second season, the vessel was originally captained by Phil Harris.
Late within the fourth season, Gamrath served as an acting captain during the Opilio season. The fifth season also saw Gamrath take up the role during the King Crab season.

Tragically, however, Harris died at the age of 53 in 2010, after enduring an intracranial hemorrhage. The sixth season of the series would be the last to feature him.
Following this, various other figures took on captain duties on the vessel. This includes Derrick Ray, Tony Lara, Josh Harris, and Casey McManus.
However, some fans still wonder what happened to Gamrath over the years. More to the point, many wondered why he didn’t continue as the vessel’s acting captain.
Taking to the show’s Reddit fan page, one fan asked, “Why didn’t Murray take over as captain after Phil died? The dude Jake and josh brought on that everyone hated was terrible and everyone hated him. Was Murray just 100% retired or was there more [to] it?”
It’s Believed Captain Murray Made His Last Appearance On The Show In 2018
Back in 2016, a Facebook video, reportedly uploaded from Gamrath’s phone, also gave fans a quick update. As it read, “So several people have asked what happened to Murray, or where has he been, since he hasn’t posted in quite some time.
The caption continued, “Well he has been fishing…since he is finally home I found some video on his phone and thought I’d share. (This is Jody posting, btw.) This is October 28, 2015, king crab [season].”
According to IMDB, Murray made in final appearance on the series in 2018. This was in the fourteenth season episode, “Collision Void.” Notably, his last appearance on the show had been during the fifth season in 2009.
However, fans also shared what they believed caused Gamrath to leave the vessel. One fan noted that the series already hinted at what had happened to him.
Some Fans Suggested Finances Caused Murray To Switch Ships
As the fan continued, “You see/hear from Murray once more in later seasons running a boat not being followed by the show. I believe Jake needed a part and Murray and his boat were in the area and was able to help Jake out.”
Another user backed up this claim, sharing Gamrath was working on the Kodiak from the sixth to eighth season. It was also noted he also gave Jake a needed hydraulic hose. Another claimed he was working on the Titan Explorer.

Some fans also suggested that financial issues could be been the issue. As they elaborated:
- “IIRC, the Cornelia was having a lot of mechanical issues around the time of Phil’s death. I think they had just replaced one engine and the other one started acting up. It might not have been worth it to him financially at that time”
- “Ya the engines were toast… the boat didn’t run well until they took on partners that loaned them over a million bucks … they really souped it up well… I hope so done is crabbing with it now.”
- “The engines were toast early on in the show and deckhand Dave millman commented that with the money they spent repairing the engines they could have replaced them already”
Regardless of why he left, Gamrath was surely missed. Many comments touched on how much fans enjoyed him on the show:
- “I think Murray made a wise decision leaving a sinking ship.”
- “I liked him, for some reason I liked seeing him taking over for Phil, hope he’s good, they should have him come in for season 21 to boost up the show a bit.”
- “I agree he was awesome on the show”
