Since 2015, viewers of Life Below Zero have seen Jessie Holmes get the chance to follow his dreams as a dogsled racer. With the series believed to be coming to an end, fans have especially become invested watching Jessie recently compete. In fact, one fan recently took to Reddit to give fans update over a recent race.

Jessie Holmes Entered His First Dogsled Race In 2018

First coming out in 2013, Life Below Zero explores the lives of subsistence hunters as they live in remote areas of Alaska. One figure viewers have come to know through the show is Jessie Holmes, a fisherman, hunter, and dogsled racer.

Holmes, a Sylacauga, Alabama, native, has made of life for himself in Brushkana, Alaska, living with around 40 dogs. During the winter, snow makes dog sledding a necessity to survive.

The Alabama native first joined the series in 2015. Thanks to the money he received from appearing on the show, he could more easily find his dream of dog sledding.

In a statement with CBS 42, Holmes shared that, “That allowed me to be able to make an income, not by building houses, not doing yard work, but just living my life. I took all that income and pursued my dreams.” As the publication noted, Holmes took part in his first Iditarod race in 2018.

One Life Below Zero Fan Kept Fans Updated About A Recent Race

Taking to the show’s Reddit page, fans have recently shared their excitement over Holmes’ racing season. As one fan, identified as “chaiinprogress,” wrote, “I know he left the show for its final season…. but Holmes is bib 27 for the copper basin, 300 mile race kicks off today.

“[His] team can’t stop, has two dog teams in the race with Jessie leading one of them. If anyone’s a Holmes fan that wants to watch mushing, I started watching last year and have enjoyed it.”

“I really like the community aspect all the check points seem to have. A few other people on the spin offs also race. Go, Jessie, Go!”

The original poster also took to the comments to share updates. Over this past weekend, the fan noted:

  • “Less than ten miles in and Jessie has stopped for unknown reasons, an extended stop. Closing in on an hour resting. His usual pattern is 4-6 hours racing and a 3-4 hour stop so this is unusual. It has bummped him into last place but its a 300 mile race with LOTS to go. Hes also had tracker issues in the past so there may be an issue there.”
  • “As of right now, 740am EST 440am Alaska time, jessie is in the first place and on the move. Jody appears to be in 18th but it’s the middle of the night and many mushers took a rest and theres LOTS of race still left.”
  • “Jesse is in first place, as he pulls into the roadhouse check point, just over half way through the race. I’m fairly sure he will take his mandatory 12 hour rest here so good timing for my east coast self. His second team, led by Kelsey Winters, is in fourth. Jody Potts is in 14th place at mile 134, heading up some mountains.”
  • “He proved me wrong. He kept going. Still in first place, currently running. It’s 220am there. This is why I could never dominate this sport, I could never do that XD i need my rest. Jody Potts is resting, so it’s a bit hard to tell what place she’s in…she’s been resting for over 5 hours.”
