‘Mufasa’ Headed To Disney+ But When Will It Drop On Streaming?
Mufasa hit theaters right before Christmas and has dominated the box office. The Disney CGI film plays out the same as previous releases like The Jungle Book and The Lion King remakes, and it has proven popular with families this holiday season. It will also arrive on DIsney+, but it is not yet available.
Here is what we know about Mufasa’s Disney+ premiere.
When Will Mufasa Hit Disney+ Streaming?
Often, fans will never know where or when a movie will hit streaming services. There is no telling about several studios if it will hit Netflix, Peacock, Hulu, Paramount+, or Max. However, there are some cases where it is obvious. Mufasa, the prequel to The Lion King, is a Disney movie. That means it will end up on Disney+ streaming.
Disney+ has not announced when Mufasa will arrive on the streaming service. However, we can make an educated guess based on history. Disney will release a movie in theaters, and it will typically remain available there for 90 days (unless it flops). It will go on sale and for rent in digital format after 90 days.
Two or three weeks later, Disney will release the movie in stores on Blu-ray, 4K, and DVD. It used to be that after the physical copies went on sale, it took about four months for the movie to arrive on streaming services. This means it wouldn’t hit streaming until eight months after it was in theaters.
Now, we can look at a recent example of a theatrical hit (which Mufasa is). Deadpool and Wolverine was a billion-dollar movie with a long theatrical life. It hit theaters on July 26, 2024. It dropped on Disney+ on November 12, 2024. This means it was on streaming four months after its release. It seems Disney+ has significantly shortened the window for its own properties.
Based on this, Mufasa hit theaters on December 9. Expect it to hit Disney+ by April 2025.
How Well Did Mufasa Do At The Box Office?
Mufasa told the story about how King Mufasa and his brother Scar were close when they were cubs and protected each other at all costs. However, as Lion King fans know, they became bitter enemies, and this movie shows how that all happened.
The movie has been a big success, and it has made almost $500 million since its release. It likely won’t hit Deadpool & Wolverine numbers, but it was still a success for Disney. It was also a movie fans liked, with an 89% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes, although critics only scored it 55% Fresh. It seems this might be a popular pick for families when it hits Disney+.
