Was Jay Leno Beaten Up By Mobsters?
Jay Leno, 74, has suffered a series of recent injuries. There have been several rumors about how these injuries occurred. Some of the most prevalent was that mobsters beat up Leno because he was falling into gambling debts. Leno recently appeared on Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast and was asked about the rumors.
Here is what Leno said about the idea that mobsters are beating him up for money.
Jay Leno Addresses Recent Injuries
Bill Maher welcomed Jay Leno on a recent Club Random podcast episode. In the interview, Maher asked about Leno’s recent string of injuries. He then asked if it was true that mobsters were beating him up because of recent building gambling debts.
Leno recently broke his wrist and bruised his face after a decent fall. He showed up at a charity event in Las Vegas in November, and that is when he talked about the injuries. “I’m feeling good,” Leno told red carpet reporters at the time, “I’ve got a broken wrist, but I’m all right.”
When Maher asked about possible mobsters being responsible, Leno shook it off. Leno owns almost 200 cars (many collectibles worth millions of dollars). He responded to the rumors by saying, “Well, I like the idea that they wouldn’t just take one of my cars for the gambling debt.”
After this, Leno did some talking about gambling debts and the mafia. He said that he has no affiliation with the mob. However, he did admit that many years ago he had a run-in with the mafia when he was a young comedian trying to get his big break.
Jay Leno Explains Former Mob Connection
When Leno was explaining about his run-in with the mafia in his younger days, he emphasized that he didn’t get involved with them and stayed clear to protect himself.
“I was pretty smart,” Leno said. “I remember years ago, I was at Catch a Rising Star, and I was onstage, and this guy — a mob guy — comes up to me afterwards and he goes, ‘Hey, you’re a funny kid. You’re a funny kid.’” The mobster then put a $100 bill in Jay’s pocket. However, Jay said he made the right decision at that moment.
He thanked the mobster but said he would rather the guy donate the money to the church. “He says to me, ‘You know, you’re a smart kid. You don’t take money from people like me. That’s smart.’ And nobody ever bothered me again.” Jay then said that he had seen mobsters “kick the crap” out of comics all the time for being “wise a** onstage.”
Leno said he doesn’t gamble, so the rumors are all false.
