Katy Perry Slammed By ‘Idol’ Contestant She Eliminated
Katy Perry, already known as a singer and songwriter, prominently served as a judge on American Idol for seven years. Throughout her time on the show, the star helped to decide who was coming closer to fulfilling their musical dreams. However, one American Idol alum she eliminated has spoken out after Perry received backlash over a recent album.
Katy Perry’s New Song Received Some Side Eye From A Former Idol Contestant
Perry has spent around seven years as a judge on American Idol, helping to determine who would get closer to accomplishing their musical ambitions. The star joined the show in 2018 during the sixteenth season. However, Perry would announce her exit from the series in 2024, ending with the twenty-second season.
Perry has also continued with her own musical career. However, one of the star’s recent albums, 143, has found itself being panned by critics.
One critic, in particular, actually has a past with Perry from her American Idol days. As shared by Entertainment Weekly, a musician named Steven James, who was eliminated by Perry on the show, shared his critique in a TikTok video.
Over the past weekend, James gave his reaction to Perry’s song, “OK.” The song came out earlier this month as part of 143‘s deluxe edition, 1432.
Throughout the video, James could be seen grimacing and giving side eyes as the song played. As he wrote over the video, “This can’t be the same person who eliminated me on American Idol 5 years ago.”
Some Commenters Claimed The Song Reminded Them Of A Certain Children’s Show’s Theme
Many fans took to the comments to share similar sentiments. One fan wrote, “Sounds like a theme song of a PBS kids show.”
Another had a particular children’s show in mind while listening to the song, writing, “It’s giving the Arthur theme song.” James himself responded to this comment with a skull emoji.
Arthur was a long-running animated series that came out in 1996, revolving around author Marc Brown’s aardvark character. The animated series came to an end in 2022.
One fan felt the song didn’t live up to Perry’s earlier work. As they wrote, “This is not the same Katy Perry who released One of the Boys.”
However, some defended the song. One commenter wrote, “Yes, she is and that song is really ‘goood.'” James himself responded to this, noting, “It’s growing on me tbh.”
Perry herself addressed earlier criticism of the album when she appeared on Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast. At the time, she shared, “I understand that it started a lot of conversations, and he was one of many collaborators that I collaborated with.”
“But, the reality is it comes from me. The truth is I wrote these songs from my experience of my whole life going through this metamorphosis, and he was one of the people to help facilitate all that, one of the writers, one of the producers.”
