Dave Coulier’s best-known role for many fans is arguably Joey Gladstone on Full House. Viewers of the late 1980s and early 1990s fell in love with the sitcom during its original run of eight seasons, which later inspired the Fuller House spin-off. Coulier recently looked back on the filming of the series’ pilot, even noting the elements he thought made it work.

Dave Coulier Said The Cast Wasn’t Sure What ‘Direction The Show’ Would Take

Coulier played Joey Gladstone on Full House from 1987 to the series’ cancelation in 1995. On the series, he played a young comedian who moves in with his widowed, childhood friend, Danny Tanner, and helps him and his brother-in-law Jesse raise Danny’s three daughters.

In addition, Coulier has had a prominent role as a comedian in real life and has often served as a voice actor, a talent he often showcased on Full House. He also reprised his Joey character on episodes of Fuller House and even directed a few episodes of the sequel series.

Back in September, Coulier made an appearance on a panel for 90s Con Florida in Daytona Beach. While there, he admitted, the cast originally “didn’t know which direction the show was going to go,” little guessing the show would be a hit.

According to People, Coulier also added something he knew would make the show a hit. As he shared, “When I saw Jodie and Candace and how funny they were, I thought, we’re good, these kids are really funny.”

The Actor Knew Some Of His Co-Stars Were Funny, But Others Surprised Him

Coulier said he knew John Stamos and Bob Saget, who played Jesse and Danny respectively, were funny. However, he noted Candace Cameron Bure and Jodie Sweetin, who played D.J. and Stephanie Tanner, pleasantly surprised him with their talent.

“When I saw these two and how good they were, I thought, we’re good. We’re going to be on cruise control if we could just keep doing this. It was really exciting and wonderful.”

However, it was the audience that really showed the cast what an impact the sitcom would have. “We talk about this often, about how incredible our Full House fans are.”

“A lot of times we’ll hear, ‘Look, I had a really tough childhood and you guys helped me get through some really tough times. You were my family every Friday night.'”

“When you hear that enough times you start to realize you had a positive impact on a lot of kids. I think collectively, all of us are really proud of that. For me personally I think that would be the one thing that resonates with me is ‘Wow, we really did something great for the kids.'”

Over the years, Full House still has a lasting impact on the actor. Notably, he and John Stamos recently shared a photo of their rehearsals on the Fuller House sequel series. Back in 2023, he also began hosting the Full House Rewind rewatch podcast.
