Sean Kanan Has Appeared On A Variety Of Soaps
As an actor, one of Kanan’s most famous roles is the antagonistic Mike Barnes in The Karate Kid Part III, a role he reprised in Cobra Kai. However, he’s also known for his work in soap operas.
In 1993, Kanan joined the cast of General Hospital as A. J. Quartermaine, a role he appeared in well until 2014. In 2000, he would take on the role of Deacon Sharpe on The Bold and the Beautiful. Kanan would also appear as the character on The Young and the Restless.
According to People, Kanan recently opened up with the publication about his personal life. In particular, he talked about his turn to sobriety, a decision made five years ago.
At the time, the actor revealed his wife Michele, who he married in 2012, was the catalyst for this move. As he shared, she gave him a plea that hit him “like a lightning bolt.”
The actor noted, “She said to me at one point, ‘I have put my heart and everything into this relationship. Please tell me that I didn’t back the wrong horse.'”
Kanan admitted sobriety was something he struggled with for years. As he noted, “I had been trying for a very long time to get sober, and I had intermittent periods of success followed by fairly catastrophic setbacks, let’s say. But when I heard that, I don’t know. The skies parted.”
The thought of losing Michele really helped Sean in wanting to make a permanent change. He noted, “I believe there’s two forces in the universe that create profound and lasting change in human beings, and that’s fear and love. I was motivated by both.”
Michele Herself Also Spoke With The Publication
Kanan continued, “I was in fear of losing the thing that I loved the most, which was Michele.” He noted “that was the ultimate catalyst that finally got me to get it together.”
Michele herself spoke with the publication. She noted her plea wasn’t meant as an “ultimatum.” Instead, she wanted to give Sean a “safe space” to help him reflect and work on himself.

As Michele shared, “I told him, ‘Look, this is our life together, and it’s either going to be painful and you’re going to watch me slowly die because I love you, and I see that you’re hurting yourself for some reason that I can’t fix, and that’s going to slowly kill me as well. So, we’re in it together. Whatever you want to do, the ball is in your court.'”
“To me, being a partner is you take the good and the bad. I always knew that that guy was in there.”
Sean noted his wife “really played the long game. She understood this was not going to be a quick fix, but given the right environment and the right positive reinforcement, that I was going to get it.”
