‘American Idol’ Crew Happier With Katy Perry Gone
When ABC revived American Idol seven seasons ago and brought it back to TV, it hired three new judges. Those judges remained consistent for the show’s next seven seasons. That included Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie. In 2025, the judges have changed for the first time on ABC, with Carrie Underwood replacing Perry.
According to sources, the AI crew is much happier with Underwood in the role. Here is what you need to know.
American Idol Crew Happier WIthout Katy Perry On The Show
After the last season of American Idol ended, Katy Perry stepped down as a judge. She admitted wanting to release a new album and go on a world tour to perform her music. While fans have not been very receptive to her new music, and things are not going as planned, AI moved quickly to replace her.
Carrie Underwood, the most successful winner in the show’s history, stepped up and agreed to become the new third judge alongside Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. With the auditions already filmed and the show returning in March 2025, it appears the crew is much happier with Carrie than with Katy.
One production insider said Carrie Underwood was a “godsend” for the reality singing competition series (via The U.S. Sun). “I hate to sound so cheesy, but actually it’s like is a ray of sunshine after a chaotic and stormy few years with some of the on-camera talent,” the source said about the changes.
This might be because of Katy’s personality on set, but there were also controversies she was involved in. She picked up a lot of flack for kissing a young male contestant on the show. The youngster said it made him “uncomfortable.” She also mom shamed a contestant who auditioned for the show.
How Is Carrie Underwood Different From Katy Perry On American Idol?
“To put it bluntly, everyone in the crew, the studio suits, all the producers – really everyone is much happier and more comfortable now with Carrie on the panel,” the American Idol source admitted.
Despite being on the show for seven seasons, the source said that Katy never really fit in with the rest of the team on the reality series. “There was also an unpredictability factor there that did not sit right with people,” they said. “Even with Luke and Lionel, it got better but it never quite felt right.”
However, they said Carrie Underwood is “very professional and a natural.” She has been close to Luke Bryan for years and, thanks to her time as a contestant on the show, has known Ryan Seacrest even longer. “Everyone who works on the show 100% prefers working with Carrie to Katy,” they finished.
