Kelly Clarkson’s Ex Didn’t Think She Was ‘Sexy’ Enough For TV
Kelly Clarkson went through a tough and nasty divorce with Brandon Blackstock. Now, it seems the marriage was not going well long before they called it quits in 2020. It also appears that Brandon once made insulting comments about his wife’s looks when she tried to get onto The Voice as a coach.
Here is what Brandon reportedly said about Kelly’s looks when she wanted to return to TV.
Brandon Blackstock Didn’t Feel Kelly Clarkson Was Sexy Enough
Kelly Clarkson was one of the most successful coaches in The Voice history. While she didn’t win as many titles as Blake Shelton, she did have a better winning percentage in fewer appearances than Blake. However, there was almost a chance that Kelly never joined the show. She might have never taken the chance if she listened to her ex-husband.
On some court documents surrounding Kelly’s divorce from Brandon, she said that Brandon once told her she wasn’t “sexy” enough to be on the judging panel of the singing competition series. Brandon served as her manager for several years. He reportedly said that her personality was too similar to Blake Shelton’s and that the show likely wanted someone sexy like Rihanna.
The court documents said that Kelly was asked about this in the divorce case. She said a “wife doesn’t forget a time she gets told she’s not a sex symbol, so that stays” (via New York Post).
Luckily, Kelly Clarkson ignored Brandon’s comment and went for it anyway. She proved good enough to win a spot on The Voice and remained there for many years. She served as a coach from Season 14 to Season 21 and again in Season 23. She won four times in her first eight seasons on the show.
Kelly Clarkson Has Become A Major TV Star
While Brandon Blackstock repeatedly felt Kelly Clarkson wasn’t sexy enough for TV, she has proven him wrong. On top of her nine seasons on The Voice, she also hosted the American Song Contest in 2022 and The Kelly Clarkson Show since 2019.
While she is no longer a regular on The Voice, she is still going strong with her talk show. She has hosted it for six seasons and is closing in on 1,000 episodes. She has also moved into the position that Ellen DeGeneres used to have as the primary daytime talk show host, winning 22 Daytime Emmy Awards since the show started. She won Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show Host in 2020, 2021, and 2022, and Outstanding Talk Show Host in 2023.
