‘Jeopardy!’ Players Called Out For ‘Easy’ Super Bowl Question
When it comes to Jeopardy! questions, the players on the show are very smart in a variety of areas. However, there are at least two spots where these players often come up short. Those areas are pop culture questions and clues about sports. This came into play this last week on the game show when the Final Jeopardy! question ended up a triple stumper.
Here is a look at the question and how everyone playing missed out on the big money win.
Jeopardy! Players Triple Stumper Sports Questions
The game featured one-day champion Eric Weldon-Schilling, a bar manager & sommelier from Houston, Texas, defending his newly won title. He went up against Laura Faddah, a manager from Memphis, Tennessee, and Neal Bowling, a journeyman lineman from Mackinaw, Illinois.
After the first set of questions, Eric was in the lead with $2,800. However, heading into Double Jeopardy!, Laura roared back and had $6,400. Neal was struggling with only $400 at that point.
By the end of Double Jeopardy!, things tightened up. Laura remained in first with $13,600, with Eric right behind her at $10,000, and Neal still in last place at $9,800. That led to Final Jeopardy!, and anyone could win with the right answer. The category was “Super Bowl History.”
Ken Jennings read the clue: “It’s the only team to play in the Super Bowl before Neil Armstrong’s moon walk that has not been back to the big game since.” No one got it right. Neal guessed the Cleveland Browns and wagered $7,000. The Cleveland Browns have never played in a Super Bowl.
Eric then guessed the New York Giants, and the defending champion wagered all $10,000 of his winnings. This was also wrong. The Giants have been to five Super Bowls and even beat the New England Patriots in 2008 and 2012.
Laura guessed Houston. Neither the Houston Oilers (the team when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, who is now the Tennessee Titans) nor Houston Texans (who have only been around since 2002) played in the Super Bowl before the moonwalk, but the Titans have been in the big game since. However, she only wagered $2,400, so she won.
The answer was the New York Jets. Ken Jennings admitted they have had a pretty rough 55 years since Neil Armstrong walked on the moon.
There Was Once A Sports Jeopardy!
Many fans wondered about the question. On Reddit, GutsyMan wrote, “Either the person on the writing team who wrote up today’s FJ is a massive Jets fan releasing some pent-up frustration, or they’re taking incredible delight in the absolutely awful season the Jets are having this year. Either way, it’s a great & timely clue.”
Eric responded in the same thread and wrote, “Sports has always been my absolute weakest category. When can announced that the final Jeopardy category was Super Bowl history I legitimately cursed under my breath.”
With Pop Culture Jeopardy! on Prime Video, it has opened up a chance for people with pop culture knowledge to apply their knowledge to an area that many fans on the regular show struggle at. Sports fans also had this chance once when Sports Jeopardy! aired on Crackle in 2014. Former ESPN analyst Dan Patrick was the host of the show. It lasted three seasons and 116 episodes.
