Debbie Nelson, mother of rapper Eminem, recently passed away at the age of 69. Since the news has come out, the rapper’s half-brother, Nathan “Nate” Kane Mathers, recently shared his reaction on social media.

Nate Shared A Simple Caption With His Instagram Stories

Nelson had passed away in Missouri following a battle with lung cancer. She had been diagnosed back in September. At the time, it was believed she didn’t have much time left.

At this time, Eminem himself, who was born Marshall Bruce Mathers III, hasn’t released a statement concerning his mother’s passing. However, his half-brother, Nathan “Nate” Kane Mathers, recently shared his response through Instagram Stories.

This past Tuesday, the rapper’s brother wrote, “Hatred and mixed emotions today.” As seen in the post, the caption was written in white against a black background.

Nate didn’t directly refer to his mother or their relationship in the post. However, both Nate and Eminem were known for their strained relationship with their mother.

Nate was born to Nelson and with Fred Samara Jr., around 14 years after Eminem was born. When he was eight years old, Nate was placed in foster care.

Nate was then adopted by Eminem when he was 16 years old. As noted by Koimoi, Nate has often credited his older half-brother as a father-figure in his life.

Eminem’s Relationship With His Mother Was Often Highlighted In His Music

The publication then shared a 2004 quote Eminem gave to Rolling Stone, saying, “When [Nate] was taken away, I always said if I ever get in a position to take him, I would take him.” He continued, “I tried to apply for full custody when I was 20, but I didn’t have the means.”

Eminem was also known for using his off and on relationship with his mother in his music. Notably, it was the focus of the 2022 hit “Cleanin’ Out My Closet.”

As noted by Page Six, two decades before her passing, Nelson herself also talked about her relationship with her sons with The Village Voice.

At the time, Nelson shared that, “I’m not ever gonna give up on my kids. I won’t give up on anybody. There’s hope for everybody. It’s a matter of just basically swallowing your pride.” As she continued, “It’s like a cashed check. It’s over, it’s done. You need to move on.”

For his part, Eminem himself also discussed wanting to make amends with his mother in the 2013 song, “Headlights.” As he rapped, “I went in headfirst, never thinking about who what I said hurt. The song continues, “My mom probably got it the worst.”
