‘DWTS’ Cheryl Burke Thinks Judges Need More Dance Education

Former pro dancer Cheryl Burke thinks the current Dancing With The Stars judges need a little more formal education.

This isn’t the first time the Season 2 champion spoke out against the judges. Not long ago, she criticized their scoring and took specific jabs at head judge Derek Hough.

See what she has to say now.

Cheryl Burke Feels Annoyed The Judges Aren’t As Strict As They Once Were

Since leaving DWTS at the end of Season 31, Cheryl Burke has hosted her own podcast about the show, Sex, Lies, and Spray Tans. While it boasts a significant listener base, many others have criticized the show. Maks Chmerkovskiy even said he regretted appearing as a guest since the content is so negative.

In a new episode, Cheryl admitted she doesn’t think the judges have enough ballroom education.

Since the DWTS premiere in 2005, all the cast members have changed their approach from season to season. Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba have been with the series since Season 1, but they’ve also changed the way they critique. Cheryl Burke thinks they’re not nearly as strict as they used to be and that’s a problem.

“They have to be able to back up whatever they say,” Cheryl explained on her show. “If you’re just saying things because you know it’s the right terminology, and you can’t explain yourself as to why it should be a certain way, then it’s kind of hard. Unless they get judges that have more ballroom experience than, you know, some of the current ones that are seated there as of last season. You can’t really be more strict in a genre that you’re not an expert in, is my point.”

Do Anger & Bitterness Play A Role In Her Critique?

Furthering ballroom education can only benefit the judges and contestants overall. However, some DWTS fans think Cheryl Burke has a grudge against the show and current judges. She made it abundantly clear she wanted Len Goodman’s job after he also retired at the end of Season 31.

Ultimately, Dancing With The Stars execs opted to promote Derek Hough to head judge instead of adding a seat for Cheryl.

“Just like the pro dancers have to continue to educate themselves on their craft, I also feel like the judges should do the same,” the former pro continued. “I also think Derek should take his adjudicator’s exam. Carrie Anne should do it. So should Bruno. I think that’s important, and why wouldn’t you wanna do that? After all these years, if you weren’t as familiar with the genre, why don’t you familiarize yourself with it? Or maybe they have, I don’t know. I’m not them.”

Do you agree with Cheryl’s critiques? Or does this have more to do with missing out on a promotion? Be sure to share your own thoughts and ideas in the comments.
