Jeopardy! champion lost after missing the Final Jeopardy! question. While he seemed disappointed in the loss, Ken Jennings took the time to make a little joke after the miss, and fans were not amused. Many said that Ken needs to learn to “read the room” before making quips.

Here is a look at the question and what Ken said that made things a little awkward.

Reign As Jeopardy! Champion Comes To An End

Mehal Shah had an interesting reign as Jeopardy! champion. After winning his first game, he returned to defend it and made some wild bids. He got all three Daily Doubles on the second game and went all-in every time. He lost one but won the other two and ended up running away with the win.

However, his luck ran out on Day 3. Mehal played Adam Hersh, an attorney from Brooklyn, New York, and Courtney Schooley, a preschool teacher from Tulsa, Oklahoma. The game mostly came down to Mehal and Adam, who kept taking the lead back and forth.

This time, Adam got two of the Daily Doubles and went into the Final Jeopardy! round with the lead. In Final Jeopardy!, Mehal still had a chance, and the category was “Movies and Psychology.” The clue was: “In this film, Paula Alquist tells Gregory Anton, ‘Have you gone mad, my husband? Or is it I who am mad?”

The answer was the classic noir film: “What is Gaslight?” Both Adam and Courtney got it right. Mehal missed it, and his reign as champion came to an end.

Ken Jennings Makes Awkward Joke After Jeopardy! Loss

Courtney doubled her total to $16,601 with the right answer. However, Adam won when he also got the right answer and finished with $29,000. Mehal was the only one who missed the question, writing, “What is folie de deux?”

Ken Jennings decided to make a little joke after Mehal’s wrong answer. The host said, “What is folie de deux? The Joker movie?” Mehal shrugged, and Ken chuckled. “Not correct. What did you wager? Everything. You drop down to zero.”

Fans were not happy with Ken’s comment and felt that he should read the room. It was clear that Mehal was disappointed:

  • “The Joker movie?’ LOL damn Ken chill.”
  • “Did anyone else think Ken’s Joker joke was awkward timing? I know he didn’t mean anything by it but Mehal looked so sad.”
  • “Read the room Ken not the time to joke when his dream just got crushed.”

This was a tough break for Mehal. The upcoming Tournament of Champions is taking champions who won at least three games thanks to very few big winners. If Mehal had won this game, he could have made the cut.
