Following production delays, contract disputes, and more, Yellowstone is finally back on the air, as the Western drama that started it all from Taylor Sheridan gears up for its epic conclusion. Fans have been with the show for years, and it fast became one of the most popular scripted dramas around.

The universe that Taylor Sheridan has created surrounding the history of the Dutton family has captivated audiences for years. However, the recent handling of a major character in scenes rubbed a lot of viewers the wrong way, and they have not been shy about making their opinions known.

John Dutton Death Shocked Fans

John Dutton died in recent Yellowstone scenes. While that end may have eventually come for the character, contract disputes moved it up significantly. Dutton’s death comes when most watchers would have loved to see Kevin Costner stick around longer to really put the final touches on a character that he breathed life into.

Unfortunately, that was not the case in recent Yellowstone scenes. The tragic end to the character was labeled a “sui*ide” in Season 5B, Episode 9. Many suspected something like this was coming, considering all of the off-camera drama. Still, the way Yellowstone treated the main character and family patriarch still upset a lot of fans.

Yellowstone: Luke Grimes Responds To Recent Fan Backlash

Actor Luke Grimes recently spoke out about the death of John Dutton. While he understands the reactions of fans, Grimes (who plays Kayce Dutton) also reiterated that John’s death was always in the script, and was always meant to happen.

Speaking to PEOPLE recently, Grimes said: “I think they feel sort of cheated. And what I would say to that is, I think we were all lucky to have Kevin on the show as long as we did. It was always the plan for him to have to go away for the story to really ramp up, and that was the story. You lose a patriarch of the family. Can the kids do it on their own?”

Grimes went on to add: “I think originally he was supposed to die much earlier. So, in a way, they got way more of John Dutton than they were going to originally get. I would keep that in mind.”
