Jeopardy! occasionally has special promotional categories meant to highlight upcoming movies, events, and even Broadway shows. Most recently, the game show had a category promoting the upcoming Wicked movie. However, fans recently got upset after they felt an Oz-themed response was unfairly rejected.

Jeopardy! Was Off To See The Wizard

Wicked is based on the Gregory Maguire book and Broadway show of the same name. A revisionist retelling of L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the story explores the early life of the story’s famous villain, the Wicked Witch of the West, known as “Elphaba” in Maguire’s story.

Jeopardy! recently had a category promoting the release of the upcoming movie adaptation. Cast and crew from the film even made appearances to introduce the clues. This included Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, who play Glinda and Elphaba respectively in the film.

One contestant, Paul Clauson, was the first to try his luck with the category. He ambitiously selected the $800 clue.

The upcoming film’s director Jon M. Chu read out the answer in a taped appearance. As he shared, “Before I even directed Wicked, I could envision it up on the big screen. And now, we invite audiences to step inside the magical world of Oz to enjoy this type of nine-letter experience.”

Clauson guessed the nine-letter word was “Wonderful.” This was likely in reference to the catch phrase, “the wonderful Wizard of Oz.” In fact, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is the original title of Baum’s classic book.

Some Fans Preferred The ‘Wrong’ Answer

Host Ken Jennings said this wasn’t the correct response, despite being the correct amount of letters. Fellow contestant Jonelle Lonergan then buzzed in with “What is Immersive?,” which turned out to be the desired response.

However, some fans took Clauson’s side, feeling that his response should have been accepted. In particular, fans thought multiple answers should have been considered for a clue like this. Due to the “wonderful wizard” wordplay, some even felt the response was a better response than the intended one.

As noted by The U.S. Sun, one fan wrote, “Is it just me or is that absolutely not pinned at all? What makes Paul’s guess of ‘wonderful’ (as in ‘wonderful wizard’) wrong? What would make my at-home guess of ‘cinematic’ wrong?”

Some fans even took issue with the show’s use of promotional categories. As one fan wrote, “I’m tired of these incredibly confusing categories just to plug something like a movie. Really unfair to the contestants who are not technically wrong.”

However, Clauson would still end the show on a happy note. During the Final Jeopardy, a clue for “American Women” read: “In 1900 she told a Mr. Dobson, ‘Get out of the way. I don’t want to strike you, but I am going to break up this den of vice.’”

Lonergan was the only contestant to give the correct response, “Who was Carrie Nation.” However, Clauson, having waged only a dollar, ended up winning the game with $21,099, giving him a two-day total of $36,300.

What did you think of Clauson’s response? Are you excited for the upcoming Wicked movie? Make sure you come back to TV Shows Ace for all the latest TV and celebrity news.

  1. ” to step inside ” means it’s immersive. Other answers are opinions, but immersive fits the actual clue.
