Gary Sinise Reveals Cancer Pushed Him Out Of Hollywood
Gary Sinise was on everyone’s TV screens for almost 10 years when he played Detective Mac Taylor in the spinoff CSI: New York. Before that, fans fell in love with the actor thanks to roles in movies like Forrest Gump and Apollo 13. However, Sinise has mostly disappeared from Hollywood and it turns out he had left compelely.
Sinise recently spoke about his Hollywood exit and explained it was because cancer had struck close to home. Here is what you need to know.
Gary Sinise Left Hollywood During Cancer Battles
Gary Sinise and his wife Moira Harris left Hollywood in 2021. They not only moved away, but Sinise has mostly retired from acting since then. It turns out that he left because two of his most beloved family members contracted cancer almost back-to-back.
Gary and Moira had been married since 1981, and the couple has three children, Mac, Sophie, and Ella. In 2018, Moria received a breast cancer diagnosis. Shortly after that, his son Mac received a diagnosis of chordoma, a rare cancer of the spine. With Sinise standing by his wife and son, his career took a back seat.
“We were in the cancer fight during that time,” he said in an interview with Fox News Digital. Gary previously claimed that he moved from California to Tennessee because of a lack of income tax. However, he was only saying that to keep his personal life private.
“My wife had been diagnosed with breast cancer; My son was diagnosed with this very rare cancer … within two months of each other,” the actor said. “My dad had just had a stroke, and my mom was alone, and I had to … take care of her. … I kind of had my hands full.”
Gary Sinise’s Son Died In His Cancer Battle
Gary has revealed that 2024 has seen highs and lows. On January 5, 2024, his son Mac died following his cancer battle. He was only 33. Mac was a musician and worked for his dad’s charitable foundation. That was a devastating loss.
Sinise said that Mac was fighting a battle with a cancer that had no cure. He said they were trying to find drugs or doctors who could do anything to help him. However, he never gave up, kept working, and fought to the very end of his life.
Mac released a musical album before his death called Resurrection & Revival: Part 2 and it was released on November 10, on what would have been Mac’s 34th birthday.
