Two months after Hoda Kotb revealed she was leaving Today, her replacement has finally been revealed. The person actually has a bit of history with the Today team. Kotb and many of her colleagues have also talked about the replacement.

The Replacement Has Had Quite The History With Today

Kotb will leave the show on January 10, 2025. The TV show host spent 26 years working with NBC. Having initially joined NBC News in 1998, she went on to become the Today show co-host with Kathie Lee Gifford around a decade later. Since Gifford’s departure in 2019, she then co-hosted with Jenna Bush Hager.

Since the news of her departure, rumors have come out over her possible replacement. However, a name has finally been announced.

Taking her place is journalist Craig Melvin. Notably, Melvin has had quite the background with the Today team, first working with them back in August 2018, having served various roles.

In 2019, Melvin became a permanent part of Today Third Hour, a position he is expected to continue in. He has also even served as a substitute anchor in the past.

As noted by Page Six, Savannah Guthrie referred to Melvin joining the show as “one of the most popular decisions NBC News has ever made.” Al Roker was also quoted as saying he was “so happy” for Melvin.

Hoda Kotb & Her Colleagues Have Congratulated Melvin In His New Role

Kotb herself also had a few kind words for her replacement. As she noted, “You were made for this job.” She continued, “You have all the things that this job needs. You’re the right person for it.”

Melvin himself shared that, “This is the latest in a long line of blessings.” He continued that, “I talked to Mom and Dad yesterday, and I’m thankful they’re still young enough and healthy enough to be able to see this.”

Back in September, Kotb shared that, “I decided this is the right time for me to kind of move on.” She continued, “And so with all that being said, this is the hardest thing in the world. At the time, Kotb said, however, that she would still remain within the NBC family.

In a statement shared by the Today website, senior vice president Libby Leist also shared “We are beyond thrilled to have Craig step into the co-anchor chair.” As she continued, “He’s been an integral and beloved part of our family.”

“From breaking news coverage in the field to presidential interviews to multiple Olympics and Super Bowls, Craig’s shown he has the talent and the range to cover all that we do here at Today. And he does it without ever losing that Southern charm.”
