‘DWTS’ Rylee Arnold Shares Health Journey, ‘Close To A Coma’
When Rylee Arnold was 15 years old, she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. The young dancer and her family felt incredibly frightened at first, especially since it didn’t run in her family.
But no matter how difficult the situation became, Rylee was determined to keep her professional dancing dreams alive. In a new interview, she bravely opened up about her challenges and the road to Dancing With The Stars.
Rylee Arnold Wants To Spread Awareness About Diabetes
Since receiving her Type 1 diabetes diagnosis, Rylee Arnold has been pretty open with the public. When she isn’t in the rehearsal room or attending events, she’s passionate about spreading awareness about diabetes.
Now, she’s using her voice to warn others how dangerous the condition can be if not properly monitored.

“I wasn’t sleeping well. I had to pee about six or seven times each night. Me and my mom used to have a little argument every morning because she would try to wake me up for school, and I just would not wake up because I was so exhausted,” she shared in a new piece in Women’s Health.
At first, she thought her chronic fatigue was due to her rigorous competitive dance schedule. But things only got worse, no matter how much rest she had. After consuming a carb-heavy meal one day, Rylee grew incredibly sick to the point where she was hospitalized.
“I got my blood drawn, and my blood sugar was 1,023. It was so scary. If I had just gone to bed that night and not to the hospital, I might not be alive today. I was really, really close to a diabetic coma,” the 19-year-old remembered. She stayed in the hospital for the next three days, desperate for answers.
The Dancer Wouldn’t Let Her Condition Stop Her
After receiving her Type 1 diabetes diagnosis, Rylee had to readjust her entire life. But after receiving a continuous glucose monitor, she can easily keep an eye on her condition and still dance. Her first year on Dancing With The Stars was difficult.
“It’s really hard to have Type 1 diabetes while dancing, because if your blood sugar isn’t in that 80 to 120 range, your energy will plummet,” Rylee shared. “It was really hard last year when I first joined Dancing With The Stars. That’s because when your stress is super high, your blood sugar naturally runs higher. It was really hard for me to combat that and also be able to do my job.”
But as her sophomore season continues, Rylee admits everything has become much easier. She says the love and support of her colleagues have made a dramatic difference. Even her Season 33 partner, Stephen Nedoroscik, has been keeping an eye on her during rehearsals.
