Pro dancers on Dancing With The Stars are just like everyone else. They get along well with some coworkers and don’t quite click with others. And some even notoriously butt heads with other dancers. But what about the rumored feud between Maks Chmerkovskiy and Derek Hough?

Maks Chmerkovskiy Admits All The Dancers Fight Sometimes

Although Maks Chmerkovskiy has plenty of projects to occupy his time, he’s no longer part of Dancing With The Stars. The Ukrainian dancer recently appeared on Harry Jowsey’s Boyfriend Material podcast to discuss his time on the show — and his alleged feud with Derek Hough.

“I mean we all beefed at some point,” Maks confessed before directly acknowledging the drama with Derek. “You know it’s so cute, like people think that Derek and I were lethal enemies always, and you know, hated each other. I literally texted today at 6:30 in the morning like to me, Val, Mark, and Derek, like ‘Yo we should go play pickleball.”

The father of three admitted that their rivalry was intense on the dance floor because Derek kept racking up Mirrorball Trophy wins. As of 2024, he holds the record for the most DWTS championships ever won with six Mirrorball Trophies. After 17 seasons, Maks only has one.

“I mean so you know the reality is that when you’re in…we were so consumed, we were so competitive we’re so in it you know?” Maks continued. “You got somebody winning mirrorballs. I also want to win, you know what I’m saying, next season. I like you as a person but I hate you as a competitor, you know? Like, those feelings got, I guess, looked at.”

The Ukrainian Dancer’s Family Still Competes On The Show

As time went on, both Maks and Derek left Dancing With The Stars. Maks went on to judge So You Think You Can Dance, while Derek later returned to DWTS as a judge. After Len Goodman’s death, Derek took over his role as head judge.

Maks no longer competes on the show, but his brother and sister-in-law, Val Chmerkovskiy and Jenna Johnson, are both part of Season 33. Maks’ wife Peta Murgatroyd hopes to return to the show in the future. But after giving birth to their third son over the summer, she opted to sit this season out.

There may be hurt feelings and angry words exchanged from time to time, but it seems like there’s ultimately nothing but love among the dancers.
