Back in 2023, Big Brother ended the 25th season by announcing the spin-off Big Brother Reindeer Games just in time for the holidays. However, the Christmas-themed event won’t be returning this year. The series’ showrunners have recently talked about why the spin-off isn’t coming back.

Big Brother Fans Got A Special Treat December 2024

In Big Brother Reindeer Games, nine contestants are invited to “Santa’s Lodge.” They then compete in various holiday-themed challenges.

Unlike the main show, the contestants don’t live together or vote each other off. Instead, contestants got eliminated through a “Santa’s Showdown” challenge.

This past December, Big Brother fans were treated to six extra episodes of the holiday-themed spin-off. However, Reindeer Games won’t return for the 2024 holiday season.

According to the series’ showrunners, it’s all due to scheduling issues. As executive producer Rich Meehan shared with Entertainment Weekly, “Because we started so late this season and CBS’ fall schedule starts so late this season, everything just pushes back.”

It was made clear that it was out of the showrunners’ hands to bring the show back in time. As Meehan continued, “So if there’s not airtime, there’s not much you can do for that.”

Meehan assured that the showrunners were fond of the spin-off. He explained, “Reindeer Games is one of our favorite things that we’ve done recently.” He continued, “It was really fun and we thought it worked really well.”

Fans Might Not Have Seen The End Of Reindeer Games

Beforehand, fans had suspected the spin-off would return. During the main show’s season 36th finale, host Julie Chen Moonves announced something big would happen. This had reminded fans of how Big Brother Reindeer Games was originally announced, causing fans to think she was hinting at the holiday show’s return.

This was not lost on the showrunners. Executive producer Allison Grodner shared that, “I think people really expected when Julie said, ‘Oh wait, there’s something in the house,’ that it would be that.” She continued, “There were some amazingly creative people online pitching that Jankie finds the true meeting of Christmas and things like that, which we loved.”

While fans won’t see a 2024 edition of Reindeer Games, this might not be the end of the series. As Grodner shared, “We loved doing the show. We thought it worked out really, really well.”

“It’s a great way to bring back alumni in a unique manner. While it’s not happening this year, it could resurface.”

Meehan also shared a similar sentiment: “Hopefully, we’re in a new year and everything looks like it’s going to be smooth sailing and everything’s worked out, so hopefully, maybe next year. That’s the goal.”

Reindeer Games wasn’t the first time Big Brother had a holiday-themed spin-off. Back in 2004, the UK edition of the series released Big Brother Panto. In this series, ten former contestants were brought in to perform Cinderella as a Christmas pantomine, a British musical stage show and holiday staple.
