Rumer Willis Talks Positives Of Sister’s Autism Diagnosis
It has been about a year since Bruce Willis’s daughter Tallulah Willis was diagnosed with autism at the age of 29. In a recent interview, Rumer Willis talked about her sister’s diagnosis and how it wasn’t a bad thing at all. In fact, Rumer says it was the opposite and was like a “homecoming” for Tallulah.
Here is what Rumer said about her sister’s diagnosis.
Rumer Willis Talks Tallulah’s Autism Diagnosis
Rumer Willis introduced her sister Tallulah at the 2024 Autism Speaks Los Angeles Gala. The event, which happened last Thursday, saw Tallulah speaking about her diagnosis, which came later in life than most people, something she said was hard, especially for a woman.
When introducing Tallulah, Rumer praised her “extraordinary sister.”
“From the very start, she stood out — not just for her creativity, which was wild and boundless, but for the way she seemed to exist on a slightly different frequency from the rest of us,” Rumer said (via PEOPLE). “While other kids were coloring inside the lines, she was busy inventing her own worlds. And honestly, most of us were lucky just to keep up.”
Rumer also said creativity was one thing, but there were also sensitivity issues. Tallulah saw the world in ways that were both beautiful and overwhelming. “Things most people never think about — textures, noises, crowded rooms — could feel like insurmountable hurdles,” Rumer explained. This caused Rumer not to understand what was wrong.
What Was Tallulah Willis At Autism Speaks For?
The 2024 Autism Speaks Los Angeles Gala honored Tallulah. They said her “commitment to promoting acceptance and raising awareness about autism exemplifies the mission of Autism Speaks and reflects her deep passion for the cause.”
Rumer said that when Tallulah received her autism diagnosis, “it wasn’t a revelation so much as a homecoming.” She said that it explained everything, and things finally made sense. She never had to apologize or explain anything. Since the diagnosis, Rumer said that her sister has grown “into herself with a grace and confidence that are breathtaking.”
Tallulah talks about her diagnosis and what she wants to let others know about autism. She calls autism a “superpower” and says that it is her “journey.” She admitted that the diagnosis gave her “a level of validation” that things are not just in her head.
“I feel very fortunate,” Tallulah said. “And with that comes my responsibility and my desire to continue to create awareness and advocacy, particularly on females getting late-in-life diagnoses.”
