Carrie Underwood is set to join American Idol, the show that made her a star, as a judge. In fact, Idol fans have seen the line-up of judges change quite a bit over the years. However, it’s rumored that one of the show’s former judges wants to make a comeback.

The Former Judge Talked About Returning To American Idol

Underwood had been announced as a judge back in August. She will be taking the role from singer Katy Perry, who served as a judge since Season 16.

Perry previously talked about leaving the show while appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live. As she shared, “I think this probably will be my last show, my last season for Idol.

“I love Idol so much. It’s connected me with the heart of America, but I feel like I need to go out and feel that pulse to my own beat. I love the show so much, but I want to go and see the world and maybe bring new music.”

During her appearance, as noted by Soaps, Perry also brought up the possibility to returning to the show: “Maybe I’ll come back if they have me one day.” This, in turn, caused Kimmel to joke, “I’m sure they’ll be very happy to have you and if, you know, it turns out you want to come back, I’m sure they’ll fire whoever replaces you.”

An Inside Source Claims There’s More To The Story

However, there is some speculation that there might be more truth to the idea of Perry’s return than fans realize. An inside source discussed the issue with Life & Style, saying it concerned her album, 143.

The source noted that, “American Idol was a safe, steady gig for Katy.” Such a job can look all the more appealing due to the recent underperformance of 143.

“Now that her album has flopped, she’s scrambling to reclaim her spot at the judges’ table. It’s a clear sign even she knows her days as a chart topping artist are behind her.”

However, as the publication noted, the source acknowledged that Perry wouldn’t be returning to the show anytime soon. As they shared, “Carrie’s got the gig now — and unless the new season is a ratings disaster, there’s no way Katy is getting back in that chair!”
