‘NCIS’ Pays Tribute To Special Friend
NCIS had its season premiere with a tribute to a special friend. The person had been someone who had been part of the show for over a decade. Actor Mark Harmon previously shared a statement over the friend’s passing.
The Tribute Came With The Start Of The Show’s Latest Season
The recent NCIS season premiere featured a note paying homage to crewmember George Schenck. The message wrote, “In Memory of our Dear Friend and Colleague George Schenck.” This was also paired with the message, “We will miss you.” The tribute came out with the Season 22 premiere, which aired on October 14.
George Schenck passed away on August 3 in his home in Los Angeles, California. He as 82 at the time of his passing. He was survived by his children, Kirk and Jeff, and four grandchildren. A private memorial service was held in his honor. In addition, at the time, the family asked donations be made on his behalf to the Writers Guild Foundation.
As noted by Variety, actor Mark Harmon, known for playing Leroy Jethro Gibbs on the show, also released the following statement: “So sorry to hear the news on George.” As he continued, “The professionalism and tenacity of George and Frank changed the face of the show. I’m so appreciative of the team and teamwork they both represented.”
George Schenck Served As A Writer & Producer
Schenck wore many hats for NCIS. Behind the scenes, he’d been a writer and producer for the show. Working from 2003 to 2018, he was attached to 318 episodes, having served as a writer on 48.
After graduating from the University of Southern California, Schenck then went on to serve in the U.S. Navy. Early in his career, he worked on shows including The Wild Wild West and Bonanza. In addition, he was also known for his collaborations with producing partner Frank Cardea and for writing for independent movies.

As noted by Monsters & Critics, Schenck joined the NCIS team during its first season. In 2016, he also became the series’ showrunner, taking on the role after the death of previous showrunner Gary Glasberg. Schenck ultimately retired in 2018.
Director Dennis L. Smith, who also worked on NCIS, also released the following statement on Instagram: “Working with George Schenck was one of the greatest joys of my directing career. His talent as a writer was only surpassed by his humor and willingness to listen. Nothing in this business is as joyous as collaboration! George you will be missed and always celebrated. RIP.”
In addition to its recent season, the NCIS series also recently premiered a prequel series, NCIS: Origins. The series revolves around a younger Leroy Jethro Gibbs in 1991, played by Austin Stowell. Harmon also serves as a narrator of the series.
