Hayley & Derek Hough Detail Safety Measures For Her Health
Last December, fans around the world felt incredibly worried for Derek Hough and his wife Hayley Erbert. During their national tour, Hayley suffered a cranial hematoma at a performance and needed immediate medical attention. Her medical team revealed she may never walk again, let alone dance. But thankfully, Hayley made a remarkable recovery.
This week, the couple celebrated their love and gratitude through the power of dance. But even so, they’re taking proper measures to ensure Hayley’s safety.
Derek Hough Feels Protective Of Hayley’s Health On The Dance Floor
Hayley Erbert Hough went on to perform with Derek on tour earlier this year after a lengthy recovery. But 10 months after her traumatic medical scare, the couple is still taking every necessary precaution to keep Hayley safe and healthy.
“We’re just very cautious,” Derek shared with PEOPLE after Dedication Night concluded. “But I’m very, very, very mindful — almost maybe overly mindful — of things that we do, moves that we do to make sure that she’s protected [so] she’s safe at all times.”
“For me, it’s all about just listening to my body,” Hayley chimed in. “I’m very in tune with my body as a dancer and I’m always like, I can tell when something’s off and I’ll be like, ‘Ooh, that doesn’t feel quite right. I shouldn’t be doing this move’ or ‘I shouldn’t be doing this number.’ I feel like I am being smart in that way of just being like, ‘I’m going to listen to myself.’”
As the couple prepares to go on tour again this winter, they’re putting safety measures in place. All members of the tour know what to look for and when to alert medical teams.
Hayley Erbert Hough Expresses Gratitude For The Performance
In the middle of Tuesday night’s episode, Derek and Hayley Hough gave a stunning performance, moving many viewers to tears. At the end, Hayley basked in the applause as the audience gave her a standing ovation.
“I was just flooded with emotions,” the 30-year-old shared about the special moment. “It was beautiful to be here, to be able to share it with him. And I’m just grateful to be here.”
Most of the pro dancers have close friendships with Hayley, some dating back to their time on So You Think You Can Dance together. It was an incredibly precious moment for the entire Dancing With The Stars family.
