‘The Simpsons’ Showrunner Talks Eventual End Of Beloved Show
The Simpsons is one of the longest-running American animated series ever made. Starting as shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show and lasting through the decades, fans could be forgiven in thinking the show could go on forever. However, one of the series’ showrunners has recently opened up about the show’s inevitable end.
The Series Just Teased Fans With What A Finale Could Look Like
Fans have been talking about the end of the series thanks to the show’s season 36 premiere. The episode featured an A.I. generating a possible finale for the series, in which Bart learns strange changes are happening in Springfield. People are dying, getting married, having children, and making all sorts of changes in their lives.
In the story, the eternally ten-years-old Bart realizes to his horror that he’s about to turn 11 and his birthday will end the show. Poking fun at the show’s infamous floating timeline, things moving forward also means an end, as the series is neatly wrapping up all of its storylines. At the last second, however, Bart manages to stop everything in time, effectively assuring viewers the show will go on.
That said, all things must come to an end. After all, all sorts of different factors could end up killing the show, such as the death of one of the main voice actors. In fact, one of the series’ showrunners has even talked about the end of the show.
In a conversation with People, executive producer Matt Selman shared, “That I’m in super denial about.” He continued “I don’t think about it, so I’m just going to not think about that,” adding, “But certainly, it’s just if the show ever does a last episode.”
A Proper Finale Might Not Be Needed, According To Selman
Selman has been part of the show since 1997, having worked on it for 27 seasons. With his time on the show, Selman also described what his vision would be for a possible finale.
As Selman shared, “I just hope it’s just a regular episode with no Winky Winky stuff at all.” He continued, “Just a great family story, just like a classic story that’s just funny and involves the whole family and doesn’t feel like it needs to wrap up anything or change anything or tie anything up or be magic or talk to the audience directly.”
In particular, Selman doesn’t think that the show necessarily needs a proper finale anymore because the season 36 premiere already provides one. As he put it, “We did that. We just did that. We covered it. Check that off the list.”
