‘The Simpsons’ Finale Shocked Fans With A Twist
The Simpsons is famous for being one of the longest-running animated American series ever made. However, the show recently aired an episode presented as a series finale. This has left fans wondering about the exact fate of the show.
Bart Is About To Celebrate A Very Special Birthday
The episode, “Bart’s Birthday,” starts with a special event presenting The Simpsons‘ big finale. Hosted by Conan O’Brien, who used to write for the series, it’s joked that many episodes from over the years had been attempts to end the series. However, a generative AI, HackGPT, is brought on to finally create a series finale.
The ensuing episode revolves around Bart’s upcoming birthday. However, strange changes are happening in town. Principal Skinner is retiring from Springfield Elementary. Homer accidentally kills Mr. Burns. Comic Book Guy and Kumiko are having a baby, with Kumiko already going into labor. It seems like something is about to give the show a proper ending.
Bart realizes to his horror that he’s about to turn 11 on his birthday, confirming that he can’t be 10 forever. At the last second, Bart is able to save the floating timeline by getting Homer to strangle him, effectively proving things can’t change.
Conan watches happily as the show merely resets itself. That said, asking the HackGPT to make 800 more episodes causes it to self-destruct.
The Episode Was Actually The Season Opener
The episode actually serves as the premiere for the show’s 36th season. While this was likely done to assure viewers the show wasn’t really ending, the episode has got some fans wondering if the show could still be ending soon.
On X and other similar social media platforms, fans speculated that Season 36 could still end up the show’s swan song. One user wrote that, “This could really be the final season of The Simpsons Jerry. This is the last year of the 2 year renewal.”

While the episode aired as a season opener, some fans pointed the show has aired things out of order before. As one user wrote, “The Simpsons new season started with an episode called the series finale. If I’m not wrong, The Simpsons Christmas special aired first even though it was supposed to be the last ep of the first season. Maybe that’s a meta hint they’re calling it with this season.”

Of course, the episode ends with Bart resetting the show, assuring viewers the show didn’t really end. However, the story could still be seen as what a series finale could possibly look like.

As noted by Vulture, series showrunner Matt Selman said the episode was made to look at what makes a good finale, as well as poke fun at AI. As Selman noted, “AI is good at regurgitating but not at being imaginative.”
